These statements on research problems in the operation and maintenance of transportation, is an attempt to identify research needs and communicate them to the transportation research communities. Of the eight problem statements considered, two, were considered high priority and two were considered moderate. Problem of highest priority was "Approach to roadside safety on two-lane non-freeways." The proposed research is outlined and is estimated to cost 125,000 dollars and to last 1-1/2 years. Problem No. 2 is "Operational effects of reduced geometry in freeway construction and work areas." Problem No. 3 is "Optimum median width for rural and suburban expressways." Problem No. 4 is "Cost effectiveness of providing skid resistant surfaces on all bituminous overlay improvements." The objectives and scope of all proposed research are stated as well as their degree of urgency, estimated cost and study time.

This Circular contains 44 research problem statements dealing with areas of pedestrian research that require attention. The priority distribution of the research problem statements is as follows: 6 High priority; 8 Medium priority; and 30 Low priority. The high and medium priority research problem statements are presented in full. The low priority problem statements are listed by title only. Members and friends of the Transportation Research Board Committee on Pedestrians submitted research problem statements, which were then reviewed, prioritized, and selected for inclusion in this Circular by the Subcommittee on Research Problem Statements.
