Rocco and Blossom A Love Story

Book Description

“Dr. Carnavale? We have him all comfortable now if you’d like to come with me.” She looked up, the dazed and bruised expression still there after an hour of fear and confusion, hands clenched tightly on her lap. Linda, the head ICU nurse, had seen her over the years; but she looked smaller now, dignified even in her flounced denim skirt and peasant blouse, her gray shoulder-length hair pinned back with barrettes centered with turquoise stones. She stood carefully. Linda lightly held her arm and guided her down the hall. They turned into the room, and even though she knew what she would see, despair settled on her at the sight of the tubes and monitors. There he lay, his beautiful white hair still thick with waves, his eyelashes surprisingly black. “As the doctor told you, he’s comfortable, and nothing will happen until you say so. If you’d like, you could go home until your children arrive,” pushing a chair closer for her even as she said it and moving a table closer so she could reach the tissues and ice water. “There’s a blanket here, and feel free to lay on the other bed if you like. We’ll be right down the hall if you need us.” She found his left hand with both of hers and laid her forehead against them. “I’m so sorry, my darling. I know I promised. It’s just until the children get here. I didn’t want you all stiff and cold when they came. Don’t be mad. I love you.” Oh how she wished it was a dream, that she’d wake up and hear him, “Baby girl, I’m here. Where are you?” Fifty-five years—how could it be, how could it possibly be—since the day she first saw him.

Sigmund Romberg

Book Description

divdivHungarian-born composer Sigmund Romberg (1887–1951) arrived in America in 1909 and within eight years had achieved his first hit musical on Broadway. This early success was soon followed by others, and in the 1920s his popularity in musical theater was unsurpassed. In this book, William Everett offers the first detailed study of the gifted operetta composer, examining Romberg’s key works and musical accomplishments and demonstrating his lasting importance in the history of American musicals. Romberg composed nearly sixty works for musical theater as well as music for revues, for musical comedies, and, later in life, for Hollywood films. Everett shows how Romberg was a defining figure of American operetta in the 1910s and 1920s (Maytime, Blossom Time, The Student Prince), traces the new model for operetta that he developed with Oscar Hammerstein II in the late 1920s (The Desert Song, The New Moon), and looks at his reworked style of the 1940s (Up in Central Park). This book offers an illuminating look at Romberg’s Broadway career and legacy./DIV/DIV

The Lombardo Story

Book Description

The Lombardo Story, Guy Lombardo and The Royal Canadians, the band's life and times, by Beverly Fink Cline, is an eBook re-issue of a 1979 book published by Musson Book Co., a division of General Publishing, Toronto, Canada. Featuring an introduction by Lebert Lombardo, the book is written with co-operation by members of the Lombardo family, who kindly spoke on many occasions with the author (whose grandfather was a childhood friend of Guy, Carmen and Lebert Lombardo) and provided her with photographs from their personal collections. The book also features reminiscences and photographs about other legendary performers, songwriters and venues, contributed by other band members, friends and fans. These memories range from stories about Louis Armstrong, John Jacob Loeb, the Roosevelt Grill, the Waldorf-Astoria, Guy's speedboating victories, to, of course, the band's longtime association with the song Auld Lang Syne and New Year's Eve.
