The Revolution of the Saints

Book Description

The Revolution of the Saints is a study, both historical and sociological, of the radical political response of the Puritans to disorder. It interprets and analyzes Calvinism as the first modern expression of an unremitting determination to transform on the basis of an ideology the existing political and moral order. Michael Walzer examines in detail the circumstances and ideological options of the Puritan intelligentsia and gentry. He sees Puritanism, in sharp contrast to some generally accepted views, as the political theory of intellectuals and gentlemen attempting to create a new government and society.

Geometric Analysis and Function Spaces

Book Description

This book brings into focus the synergistic interaction between analysis and geometry by examining a variety of topics in function theory, real analysis, harmonic analysis, several complex variables, and group actions. Krantz's approach is motivated by examples, both classical and modern, which highlight the symbiotic relationship between analysis and geometry. Creating a synthesis among a host of different topics, this book is useful to researchers in geometry and analysis and may be of interest to physicists, astronomers, and engineers in certain areas. The book is based on lectures presented at an NSF-CBMS Regional Conference held in May 1992.

Theta Functions

Book Description

This book contains lectures on theta functions written by experts well known for excellence in exposition. The lectures represent the content of four courses given at the Centre de Recherches Mathematiques in Montreal during the academic year 1991-1992, which was devoted to the study of automorphic forms. Aimed at graduate students, the book synthesizes the classical and modern points of view in theta functions, concentrating on connections to number theory and representation theory. An excellent introduction to this important subject of current research, this book is suitable as a text in advanced graduate courses.

Control of Flexible Structures

Book Description

Flexible structures arise in significant important areas of application, such as robotics, large space structures, and antenna control. Difficulties related to sensing and identification hamper control of such systems. These problems require collaboration between mathematicians and engineers. To promote such collaboration, the Fields Institute sponsored a three-day workshop entitled "Problems in Sensing, Identification and Control of Flexible Structures" in June 1992. This volume contains papers presented at the workshop. Topics range from theoretical research on the well-posedness of systems, to experimental implementations of various controllers. A number of controller design techniques are discussed and compared, and there are several papers on modelling the complex dynamics of flexible structures. This book is a useful resource to control theorists, engineers, and mathematicians interested in this important field of research.

Functional Analysis and Global Analysis

Book Description

It is a recent tendency to put emphasis on the applied side of mathematics. The entirely new development in applied fields, however, has been done often in combination with ideas and methods in pure mathematics which are seemingly not related to practical problems. Conversely, many problems in pure mathematics stem from questions raised in other fields. These Proceedings show the reader that this phenomenon is in particular prominent in pure and applied analysis. Abstract theory in functional analysis and global analysis turns out to be useful to solve problems in many branches of natural sciences, for example, biology, physics and chemistry. The International Conference on Functional Analysis and Global Analysis, held 20-26 October 1996 at the University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus, brought together mathematicians in the Southeast and East Asia to foster better cooperation for scientific development. The conference addressed the problems and applications to mathematical theories and models in Functional and Global analysis, the topics being covered by over 20 invited international speakers from prestigious academic institutions around the globe, and presented in this book. The reader will discover a harmony between pure analysis and applied analysis in the excellent articles contained here which cover topics in evolution equations, mathematical methods for phase transitions, quantum ergodicity, wavelet analysis and dynamical systems.
