Excerpt from Nature Songs Some of these songs might be placed under another head; but the imagery, viewpoint or book interest justifies their appearance here. There is already enough matter in print and some yet to come for a good sized book of Civic Songs. I trust I shall be permitted to gather and correct the old and produce some better new material in the near future for a book of Soul Songs. A later and smaller book but perhaps more appealing, would be Home Songs. It is not quite an inspiration to earn money with the hands and then throw it away in producing books that no one will read, but if the verse has any real merit, and I still think it has, it ought to be done. They've all got through and so shall I. In sending forth these songs there is nothing asked or expected but just a reading. Give them the reality and brutality of nature. All must have their judgment day and the sooner the better, but it is well to re member that in judging others we are writing the last and final sentence on ourselves. D. C. N. March lst, 1915.
