You Are One of Them

Book Description

"A hugely absorbing first novel from a writer with a fluid, vivid style and a rare knack for balancing the pleasure of entertainment with the deeper gratification of insight. More, please.” —Maggie Shipstead, The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice) "A story about Russia, the United States, friendship, identity, defection, and deception that is smart, startling, and worth reading regardless of when you were born.” —Kathryn Schulz, New York Magazine "Holt's beguiling debut… in which there is no difference between personal and political betrayal, vividly conjures the anxieties of the Cold War without ever lapsing into nostalgia." —The New Yorker Sarah Zuckerman and Jennifer Jones are best friends in an upscale part of Washington, D.C., in the politically charged 1980s. Sarah is the shy, wary product of an unhappy home: her father abandoned the family to return to his native England; her agoraphobic mother is obsessed with fears of nuclear war. Jenny is an all-American girl who has seemingly perfect parents. With Cold War rhetoric reaching a fever pitch in 1982, the ten-year-old girls write letters to Soviet premier Yuri Andropov asking for peace. But only Jenny's letter receives a response, and Sarah is left behind when her friend accepts the Kremlin's invitation to visit the USSR and becomes an international media sensation. The girls' icy relationship still hasn't thawed when Jenny and her parents die tragically in a plane crash in 1985. Ten years later, Sarah is about to graduate from college when she receives a mysterious letter from Moscow suggesting that Jenny's death might have been a hoax. She sets off to the former Soviet Union in search of the truth, but the more she delves into her personal Cold War history, the harder it is to separate facts from propaganda. You Are One of Them is a taut, moving debut about the ways in which we define ourselves against others and the secrets we keep from those who are closest to us. In her insightful forensic of a mourned friendship, Holt illuminates the long lasting sting of abandonment and the measures we take to bring back those we have lost.

Crisis Diplomacy Under Discussion

Book Description

Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict, Security, , language: English, abstract: This paper will argue that though the character of crises occupying the international agenda may have changed, the skills and expertise possessed by professional diplomats have proven to be irreplaceable in addressing crisis situations. It will do this in two parts. First, it will briefly examine traditional formations of ‘international crisis’ and ‘crisis diplomacy’, arguing that these concepts need to be adjusted to encompass the contemporary global environment. Second, it will compare the efficacy of state and non-state agents in mediating crisis situations, demonstrating that professional diplomats are still without equal.

Sporting Blackness

Book Description

Sporting Blackness examines issues of race and representation in sports films, exploring what it means to embody, perform, play out, and contest blackness by representations of Black athletes on screen. By presenting new critical terms, Sheppard analyzes not only “skin in the game,” or how racial representation shapes the genre’s imagery, but also “skin in the genre,” or the formal consequences of blackness on the sport film genre’s modes, codes, and conventions. Through a rich interdisciplinary approach, Sheppard argues that representations of Black sporting bodies contain “critical muscle memories”: embodied, kinesthetic, and cinematic histories that go beyond a film’s plot to index, circulate, and reproduce broader narratives about Black sporting and non-sporting experiences in American society.

Health Economics

Book Description

This popular textbook provides a comprehensive but accessible coverage of health economic principles and applications. It provides an introduction for those with no previous knowledge of economics, but also more advanced material suitable for those with a background in economics. Now into its second edition, Barbara McPake and Charles Normand have incorporated developments in economic evaluation and economics of health systems from recent research and experience while retaining an accessible approach and style. The book starts with a section on basic economic principles as applied to health and health care, and goes on to discuss economic evaluation in health care, the economics of health systems and health care finance. Examples and illustrations are taken from a wide range of settings and world regions, reflecting the authors¿ belief that the same principles apply, and that it is useful to have some understanding of how different countries organise the health system. It provides an understanding of the performance of different health systems from the insurance based approaches in the United States to government funding that is common in Canada and most countries in Europe, and the mixed systems that operate in most low-income countries. This book is ideal for students in public health and related courses, for health care professionals and those studying health economics at a more advanced level.

In the Mighty Name of Jesus: Breaking All Chains, Shackles and Truncating All Schemes of the Devil by the Power in the Name of Jesus

Book Description

I start by saying," what you do not believe in or have faith in can never work for you." As a young child who had real difficulties while growing up in a Christian home, I never had the understanding of how powerful the Name that is above every other name was, "The Mighty Name of Jesus." All I knew was that there was a name I could call when difficulty arises, there was a name that worked for my Dad when other names failed, there was a name that could chase away demons, there was a name strong enough to truncate all the plans or idea(s) of the devil, there was a name that ends all evil and there was a name that makes something change when it is called or called upon! My Sunday school teacher will always say," Sam, anytime you are in trouble, call that name and everything that seems unresolvable will be resolved. Sincerely, everything was not rosy for me while growing up, but I was a determined young girl who always had someone to run to when the need arises. My day was still a usual one just like every other child growing up. I wake up, join the regular morning devotion every morning which was mandated and coordinated by my father, then go to school, relate with my friends, learn something new from my teachers, and after the whole activity is over, I head back home where my mother will be waiting for me and my day closes with the night prayer that was said by my Dad. One thing I kept to myself for a long time was the fact that I had constant nightmares. I refused telling my Mum or Dad because I felt it would be a thing of the past someday. I realized after some years; the dreams intensified. I was no longer comfortable and was extremely restless. I had constant attacks during the night while sleeping that most times, I prefer staying awake to avoid unnecessary nightmares. I usually witness someone trying to hurt me which was a real pain to me. It was like some demons were always trying to get hold of me. Every night, I had constant struggles that when I wake up in the morning, I woke up weak and tired.
