Selections From the Letters of Robert Southey, Vol. 1 of 4 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Selections From the Letters of Robert Southey, Vol. 1 of 4 Prov. Xv. 15. A 4ness, interest and passion have their genuine effect; but a friendly letter is a calm and deliberate performance, in the cool of leisure, in the stillness of solitude; and truly no man sits down to depreciate by design his own character. Shrewd remarks these, beyond a doubt; but the words here printed in italics apply to men Of coarser mould than robert southey. Selections From the Letters of Robert Southey, &C., &C., &C, Vol. 4 of 4 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Selections From the Letters of Robert Southey, &C., &C., &C, Vol. 4 of 4 I found your letter on my return after an eight weeks' absence. To its former part I can only say that it would be to me a great pleasure to hear often from you, and a still greater to see you. Time and distance make no change in my affections; we shift our se quaintance as we shift our place of abode. Friendship is a different thing, and I never yet cast off a friend till he had shown himself unworthy of standing in that re lation. Among many lies in the newspapers, you have probably made out the truth respecting my return for the borough of Downton; that it was made without my knowledge, and that I have declined the honour, as being neither consistent with my circumstances, incli nations, habits, or pursuits in life. The return happens to be null, because the pension which I hold (200l.) is during pleasure. If I had chosen to take the seat, this might have been transferred to my wife, or made for life, by merely asking to have it done. But I know my station, and am contented in it. My ambition, even 11) youth, would never have led me into public life, and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Selections From the Letters of Robert Southey, &C. &C. &C, Vol. 2 of 4 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Selections From the Letters of Robert Southey, &C. &C. &C, Vol. 2 of 4 The worst part of your letter is that which relates to your own health; look well to that, and time will do the rest. It is better to have a sister, that is certain; but it is better to lose her, than, for instance, to have her years in dying of a cancer, or, what is worse, of a broken heart, from the ill usage of a husband, like Mrs. -'s sister. I am very glad you thought of Carlisle; he is truly a kind-hearted man, and even his profession has not hardened him. B - is, perhaps, the very ablest practitioner at present living to whom you could have gone; and you may rely upon him, with the most perfect confidence, that he will do whatever can be done by human skill. He is no favourite of mine; but of his talents, I have the highest possible opinion. It is useless to afflict yourself. Against this calamity, and against still greater ones, you can bear up, and must bear up. Did you ever read Mrs. Carter's "Epictetus"? Next to the Bible, it is the best practitional book and the truest philosophy in existence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Letters of Robert Southey

Book Description

Excerpt from Letters of Robert Southey: A Selection What a friendly soul, what a generous hand, what an amiable life was that of the noble Sir Walter! I Will take another man of letters, whose life I admire even more, an English worthy, doing his duty for fifty noble years of labour, day by day storing up learning, day by day work ing for scant wages, most charitable out of his small means, bravely faithful to the calling which he had chosen, refusing to turn from his path, for popular praise or prince's favour - I mean Robert Southey. We have left his old political landmarks miles and miles behind; we protest against his dogmatism nay, we begin to forget it and his politics but I hope his life will not be forgotten, for it is subhe in its simplicity, its energy, its honour, its affection. Lit the combat between Time and Thalaba, I suspect the former destroyer has conquered. Kehama's curse frightens very few readers now; but Southey's private letters are worth piles of epics, and are sure to last among us as long as kind hearts like to sympathize with goodness and purity, and love and upright life.' Life and Correspondence of Robert Southey, Vol. 1 of 6 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Life and Correspondence of Robert Southey, Vol. 1 of 6 For the delay which has taken place in bringing forth this Work I am not responsible, as it has chiefly arisen from the circumstance that no literary executor was expressly named in my father's latest will; and in consequence of the difficulties which thus arose, it was not until the spring of 1848 that the materials, as far as they had then been collected, were put into my hands. I have since then made what speed I might in the preparation of them for the press, amid the engagements of other business, and with my hand often palsied by causes over which I had no control. It were useless to endeavour to refute the various objections often made to a son's undertaking such a task; yet one remark may be permitted, that although a son may not be a fit person to pass judgment upon a father's character, he yet may faithfully chronicle his life; and is undoubtedly, by a natural right, the most proper person to have all private letters submitted to his eye, and all family affairs intrusted to his judgment.
