The Heir of Kalanglasia

Book Description

Abon is the type of boy who wishes for nothing more than to lead an ordinary life, meet as few people as possible, and abide by the will of his stern and unaffectionate Aunt Malor. Unfortunately, Abon is not an ordinary boy-he has magical powers that are rare and feared in the land of Afradaar. It is those very powers that cause him to receive a strange offer from Sir Cultan, a fellow magician. The Dark Creatures, the enemy of the people of Afradaar, have amassed an army, and only magic can defeat them. Sir Cultan needs Abon's help. Abon abandons all that he has ever known to join the fight against the Dark Creatures. Little does he realize that he is about to discover that he is even more unusual than the ordinary magician. Abon is the heir of a magical, long-lost civilization called Kalanglasia. When he learns of his prophecy and a sword is thrust into his youthful hands, Abon must learn to conquer his own nature to prevail over evil.

Las Siete Partidas, Volume 5

Book Description

Las Siete Partidas, or Seven Divisions, is the major law code of thirteenth-century Spain, compiled by Alfonso X the Learned of Castile. Seven centuries later, this compendium of legal and customary information remains the foundation of modern Spanish law. In addition, its influence is notable in the law of Spain's former colonies, including Texas, California, and Louisiana. The work's extraordinary scope offers unparalleled insight into the social, intellectual, and cultural history of medieval Spain. Built on the armature of a law code, it is in effect an encyclopedia of medieval life. Long out of print, the English translation of Las Siete Partidas—first commissioned in 1931 by the American Bar Association—returns in a superior new edition. Editor and distinguished medieval historian Robert I. Burns, S.J., provides critical historical material in a new general Introduction and extensive introductions to each Partida. Jerry Craddock of the University of California, Berkeley, provides updated bibliographical notes, and Joseph O'Callaghan of Fordham University contributes a section on law in Alfonso's time. Las Siete Partidas is presented in five volumes, each available separately: The Medieval Church, Volume 1: The World of Clerics and Laymen (Partida I) Medieval Government, Volume 2: The World of Kings and Warriors (Partida II) The Medieval World of Law, Volume 3: Lawyers and Their Work (Partida III) Family, Commerce, and the Sea, Volume 4: The Worlds of Women and Merchants (Partidas IV and V) Underworlds, Volume 5: The Dead, the Criminal, and the Marginalized (Partidas VI and VII)

Stranded far from home by injuries and the onset of winter, Charlie of Windsong finds refuge in the home of a sympathetic noblewoman to rest and wait for spring. Left homesick and disheartened by the outcome of her surreal night on the Mountain of Souls, Charlie is considering giving up her quest to return home when she receives another letter from her mysterious acquaintance, Grandmother. The letter alleges that Charlie's father, believed dead for several years, is not only still alive, but living close by in Shala. Despite considerable doubts, Charlie can't quite resist investigating, and she decides to set aside her search for the sapphire dagger to try to find her father instead. What starts as a search for one man quickly involves her in something much larger and more complex than she could have imagined. Trading solitary travel to join a band of political rebels, Charlie now finds herself at the center of a movement that will not only take her across Shala and beyond, but will also potentially change the course of history in the Eastern Lands forever. Charlie has come to enjoy the independence and self-reliance she has learned since leaving her sheltered life at Windsong to travel alone, but committing to a cause larger than herself requires putting aside her own desires for the success of the mission. As she struggles to contribute to a group that views her as an outsider, she must fight to hold onto her autonomy and determine where her loyalties lie.

The Digest of Justinian, Volume 2

Book Description

When Justinian became sole ruler of the Byzantine Empire in A.D. 527, he ordered the preparation of three compilations of Roman law that together formed the Corpus Juris Civilis. These works have become known individually as the Code, which collected the legal pronouncements of the Roman emperors, the Institutes, an elementary student's textbook, and the Digest, by far the largest and most highly prized of the three compilations. The Digest was assembled by a team of sixteen academic lawyers commissioned by Justinian in 533 to cull everything of value from earlier Roman law. It was for centuries the focal point of legal education in the West and remains today an unprecedented collection of the commentaries of Roman jurists on the civil law. Commissioned by the Commonwealth Fund in 1978, Alan Watson assembled a team of thirty specialists to produce this magisterial translation, which was first completed and published in 1985 with Theodor Mommsen's Latin text of 1878 on facing pages. This paperback edition presents a corrected English-language text alone, with an introduction by Alan Watson.
