Songs of Faith and Hope (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Songs of Faith and Hope There is no doubt of the welcome of a good song. This is more true of a gospel song. It is most true of a goodly collection of gospel songs. The book which we are introducing with this opening word has two great advantages over many of its kind. In the first place, it is official: issued by the Western Methodist Book Concern, one of the official publishing-houses of our great Church. It may be presumed that great care has been exercised in the selection of its contents, having in mind the proper teaching which the Church should indorse. Second, it is edited by a man well known in the world of gospel songs. A glance at the contents will show his skill and excellent taste. Prof. J. M. Black is the only one of many song writers and composers who was selected as amember of the Joint Commission to produce the official Methodist Hymnal recently published. Songs of Faith, Hope, and Love

Book Description

Excerpt from Songs of Faith, Hope, and Love: For Sunday Schools and Devotional Meetings Among the many helpful aids to better work in the Sunday-school, nothing is so much needed as a good collection Of hymns: hymns which shall be earnest, stirring, useful, and fairly meet the test Of literary criticism. The larger part Of the popular Sunday-school hymnology is Open to grave censure for many serious literary defects; barren doggerel rhymes, strained metaphors, unhealthy sentiments, are bad enough, but coupled with these is a trite, familiar use of sacred epithets, and the appellations of the Deity and the Saviour, which are as Offensive to correct taste as is the general illiteracy which is so marked a feature Of the host Of Sunday-school singing books whose titles are almost as numerous as the mineral and floral products from which they are named. The best which could be said for the greater part Of the. Music associated with these so-called hymns, was, that it was quickly and easily caught up: but time tests all things, and the little, jingling, superficial tunes were as quickly and easily dropped and forgotten, and the usefulness Of the book was exhausted within two years at most. Songs of Faith and Trust (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Songs of Faith and Trust Songs Of Faith And Trust Abiding Faith I step into the great unknown, I make that step there all alone, I know not now what there may be, To greet me in Eternity. I falter not, nor anguish bear, As to the state to meet me there, Or in that place, the Great unseen, I'll be as if I ne'er had been. But faith, I have, that there I'll see The One who came and died for me, The One who came, the world to save, And here, his life, for others, gave. Oh! Faith, thou bright and shining star, That beams from out the mist afar, The only guide that's given here, To lead us onward without fear. Abiding faith, thou'll me sustain, Nor come a doubt to give me pain, No doubt to cloud my footsteps here, As to that goal, I now draw near. A Song of Faith (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Song of Faith What miracle of mind was witnessed there, When silence fell succeeding murmured prayer! Their souls serene and free from every care, Awaited some unfolding of the Will, Whose tender purpose led their sentient minds Amid the treasured store-house of His love. The incense burned to ashes soft, and lay A flutter in the censer's simple cup; While twilight drew the purple curtains down To veil the luster of the glowing west. Then on the mind of Abraham was poured A vision wrought of pearly beams of light, And in its midst, unfolding like a scroll, By priests within some cloistered chamber kept, The promptings of the past. Those holy hours When trysts with God up-held his drooping soul. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
