Spain and the Spaniards, in 1843, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Spain and the Spaniards, in 1843, Vol. 1 Asturias, and Galicia, to Vigo, and then embark for England. We preferred the spring, because - although in Spain the weather is often very unsettled at that season, heavy rains interrupting the communi cation, rendering travelling uncertain and dis agreeable - with a limited time upon your hands, it is upon the whole the best; the vegetation is in its greatest beauty; the days are lengthening, and the weather improving; by regulating your movements, as I had planned, and moving north wards, you avoid the great heat, which in the southern provinces is considerable by the middle of June. Spain and the Spaniards, Vol. 2 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Spain and the Spaniards, Vol. 2 of 2 As on arriving at Madrid by way of the north, so on leaving it by way of the south, one must pass through a desolate country that resembles the poorest provinces of Arragon and Old Castile. There are vast plains, parched and yellow, which look as though they would echo like a hollow passageway if one were to strike them, or crumble like the crust of a crisp tart. And through the plains are scattered a few wretched villages of the same color as the soil, which seem as though they would take fire like a pile of dry leaves if one were to touch a torch to the corner of one of the huts. After an hour of travel my shoulders sought the cushions of the carriage, my elbow sought for a support, my head sought my hand, and I fell into a deep sleep like a member of Leopardi's "Assembly of Listeners." A few minutes after I had closed my eyes I was rudely awakened by a desperate cry from the women and children, and leaped to my feet, demanding of my neighbors what had occurred. But before I had ended my question a general burst of laughter reassured me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Spain and the Spaniards, in 1843, Vol. 2 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Spain and the Spaniards, in 1843, Vol. 2 of 2 WE had great difficulty in finding places in the diligence to Madrid, all the better seats being secured for weeks beforehand; there were two rival com panics, and we were obliged to take the coach of the inferior administration but they assured me there was little difference in the arrangements, especially in the important article of the time consumed upon the road. I must beg the attention of the reader particularly to the ensuing pages, because in them will be re lated an event of no small importance in the extra ordinary and unexpected scenes that shortly after wards followed in the south of Spain, and it formed a hinge, on which a part of the results from the movements we have seen, turned. The History of Puerto Rico

Book Description

Van Middledyk's work was the first major historical study of Puerto Rico in English. Van Middledyk advanced Puerto Rican historiography by building on the works of Brau, Coll y Toste, and Acosta, and by consulting early Spanish chronicles. A librarian at the Free Public Library of San Juan, Van Middledyk possessed knowledge of and access to considerable primary source material. His history is sympathetic to the Indians and highly critical of Spanish colonial administration. Coming in the wake of American military occupation, the book sought to explain and justify control of the island by the United States.

Revelations of Spain in 1845, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Revelations of Spain in 1845, Vol. 1 of 2 The first six months of 1845 will be for ever memorable in the legislative annals of Spain, as having been marked by most important and extensive reforms in the Constitution of 1837 - changes so vast and so threatening to liberty, and at the same time so apparently definitive, as to merit still more than our own Reform Act, the name of a Revolution. The strong position accorded to the Spanish Church of re endowment with real property, and the several events which found their completion last month, in the close of the Cortes and the promulgation of the Con stitutional Reform, combine to give to this second edition, the character of almost a new and substantive work. About one hundred original pages have been added, embodying in the various chapters, under the fitting heads, a careful analysis of all the late constitutional and legislative reforms, and a com pletion of the History to the present hour. Amidst a quantity of new and interesting matter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Stories of Spanish Life, From the German of Huber, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Stories of Spanish Life, From the German of Huber, Vol. 1 of 2 Selections from Huber's Skizzen aus Spanien, appeared in the Athenaeum in the winter of 1835, and were remarked by some persons well acquainted with the Peninsula, as affording, even in the imperfect form of Extracts, so lively and faithful a picture of the manners and customs of the people, that they were anxious to possess an English version of the entire work.
