This book underscores the crucial link between leadership and human resource management (HRM) and their collective impact on organizational outcomes. It highlights the need for integrating research in both fields to fully understand their effects at organizational, team, and individual levels. The interaction between leadership and HRM, which can either complement or substitute for one another, is beginning to be explored in recent studies. Specifically, the book points out the relevance of cultural, institutional, and historical contexts in the Asia Pacific, particularly in China, where Western models may not capture the unique aspects of leadership and HRM. It discusses the significance of paternalistic leadership and specific HRM practices in China, emphasizing their implications for performance. The book argues for the importance of examining these interactions comprehensively, suggesting that a combined study of leadership and HRM, across different levels and contexts, presents valuable research avenues. The twelve chapters in this volume offers insights into leadership and HRM in China, showcasing a variety of leadership behaviours and HRM practices. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Business Review.

This book reflects on the increasing variety of perspectives in organizational innovation research, paying attention to the antecedents, but also to the outcomes, of innovation. Some chapters analyze the ‘dark side’ of innovation, including the potential negative consequences of innovative behaviors, or of defying the innovation maximization fallacy. Others explicitly consider affective responses after innovation efforts, and assume that positive or negative effects rely on the context in which innovations occur, and on the way in which people manage the process of innovation. Several contributions adopt the dialectic approach by considering the multiple pathways and mechanisms that could lead to innovation at organizations. Most of the chapters include the interaction of actors’ characteristics (from employees or teams) together with situational constraints from the task or the social context, and outline the relevance of processes like team learning; motivation variables like basic need satisfaction; congruence of motives or meaningfulness at work; dynamics of communication networks; and affective variables. This edited collection offers a rich picture of current research and management trends in the field and contributes constructively toward promoting the dialectic perspective on creativity and innovation in the workplace. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology.

The approach to managing human resources has changed significantly in China over the last twenty-five years as its transformation from a state planned economy to a market-oriented economy continues. By adopting a broad notion of HRM, while remaining sympathetic to the strong emphasis on relationship management in the Chinese culture, Fang Lee Cooke builds on the foundations of traditional Chinese HRM practice and brings it right up to date, including analysis of currently under-explored issues such as diversity management, talent management, new pay schemes, and performance management. Including extensive first hand empirical data and pedagogical features such as vignettes, case studies, and further reading lists. This book will be of great use on upper level undergraduate, post graduate and MBA courses covering international/Chinese management and HRM as well as appealing to practitioners, students and scholars of Chinese Business, Asian Business and Human Resource Management.
