Standing under the Cross

Book Description

Standing Under the Cross focuses on Bonhoeffer's rich theological and ethical thinking. It places Bonhoeffer in conversation with a wide range of modern theologians, including Karl Barth, Franz Rosenzweig, Jürgen Moltmann, and James Cone. The book gives particular attention to hermeneutics, the body, and Bonhoeffer's rich reflections on community and discipleship. Mawson attends to the complex ways in which these aspects of Bonhoeffer's thinking work together, and shows how they can assist us in responding to some of the challenges confronting us today.

Cries from the Cross

Book Description

"To stand at the foot of the cross is to witness the purpose for which God created the world." The cross is a wonder unfathomable. Time cannot contain its reach. No kingdom can surpass its power. No heart can endure its weight. And yet it is the center of everything. It cannot be passed over. Pastor and author Erwin W. Lutzer believes that the better we grasp what the cross meant to Christ, the better we grasp what it should mean to us. To do this, Lutzer examines Jesus' cries from the cross. Search with him and see how God's love and justice meet. Know the weight of sin and the power of redemption. Look upon Jesus in His weakness, obedience, sorrow, and compassion. Let the scandal of the cross give you pause. The cross deserves our attention. Journey forth into the heart of Jesus, that your own heart may be shaped to His.

In the Shadow of the Cross: The Deeper Meaning of Calvary

Book Description

The fallen cross stands as a symbol for the spiritual condition of the church of Jesus Christ in the early days of the twenty-first century. In many places and many churches, the cross has fallen to the ground. Instead of boasting in the cross, we have neglected it, substituting in its place religious activity and therapeutic language designed to help us feel better about ourselves...And yet, when the story is truly told, it must be said that Christianity is supremely the religion of the cross. At the center of our faith a dying man hangs suspended between heaven and earth. Pastor Ray Pritchard takes a fresh look at the cross and the God-man on it and asks: who is He? why is He there? what are the words he is speaking? What did the cross mean to God? What did the cross mean to Satan? What does the cross mean to you today? Pastor Ray Pritchard asks these spiritually provocative questions in what will prove to be a spiritual tonic for your soul. Center your world around the anchor of our faith -- the cross. Discover the atonement found where grace and wrath meet. Linger at the foot of the cross.

Standing Under the Cross

Book Description

Establishing the complexity and richness of Bonhoeffer s engagements with the cross over the breadth of his theological corpus, Michael Mawson also draws on Bonhoeffer's theology to engage more recent debates, examining how one can use it to engage with a modern world changed by a pandemic and devastating ecological incidences. Bonhoeffer wrote much of theology in response to theological and political crises in his own time and this book argues that his thinking can thus provide valuable insights for negotiating some of the crises confronting us. The three parts of this book each focus on distinct areas of Bonhoeffer s theology of the cross., from hermeneutics to themes of suffering through to a focus on Bonhoeffer's engagement with community and discipleship. While previous scholars have focused on one (or sometimes two) of these areas, this book attends to the dense and complex ways in which these aspects of Bonhoeffer s thinking work together.
