How to Build and Improve a Tutoring Practice

Book Description

In 2017, I made almost 6 figures through my test-prep tutoring work ($90,189, according to my tax return). In 2018, I'm on track for comfortably over 6 figures. More importantly, I choose my own work schedule, I choose what I want to work on, and my well over 100 clients have been, by and large, delighted to work with me and pay me on my own terms. Let me rewind a bit. I started trying to support myself solely with independent tutoring a couple years ago, at the beginning of 2016. Before that, I had been working as a tutor and test prep instructor with company in Singapore, and before that I worked as a part-time tutor in college. When I started, I had a fair amount of experience teaching (although it turned out I still had a lot to learn), but I had very little experience running a business. This book explains what I learned through hard work and a lot of trial-and-error. Essentially, it's a shortcut. If you read and follow the lessons of this book, you won't have to go through all the painful learning processes that I did. You can make the right decisions when you're first setting up your tutoring business, and immediately begin reaping the rewards. Now, I didn't create this book to portray myself as a guru, or to try to pretend that the whole world should become tutors. My income, although comfortable, is not anything compared to a doctor's (as my mom, who is a doctor, likes to remind me). Also, this is far from a get-rich-quick scheme: tutoring is still a job, with cliental expectations and its own forms of drudgery. Lastly, before I was a tutor, I was still academically smart, reasonably social, and a natural teacher. Those were big advantages for me out of the gate, and they won't necessarily be true for everyone. However, if you are someone like I was, interested in tutoring but having trouble making the leap to a business owner (which is really what you're trying to become), this book is for you. This book presents tutoring as a business, and tells you how to structure that business to achieve success. So, that means you'll learn how to: 1. Design a tutoring website that makes people want to hire you 2. Get potential tutoring clients to look at your website in the first place 3. Convert a tentative email from a potential student into a check 4. Structure your interactions with a student to make them happy to work with you and pay you for a long time 5. Handle paying taxes, getting a website and professional email address, finding a place to work, and all the other annoying practicalities of working on your own. Essentially, it's a collection of what I've learned to give me the success that I've had. It's what I wish I knew before I started on my journey, and the knowledge that I won through hard work and a lot of failure. I hope you find it worthwhile.Sincerely,Trevor Klee

Ultralearning

Book Description

Now a Wall Street Journal bestseller. Learn a new talent, stay relevant, reinvent yourself, and adapt to whatever the workplace throws your way. Ultralearning offers nine principles to master hard skills quickly. This is the essential guide to future-proof your career and maximize your competitive advantage through self-education. In these tumultuous times of economic and technological change, staying ahead depends on continual self-education—a lifelong mastery of fresh ideas, subjects, and skills. If you want to accomplish more and stand apart from everyone else, you need to become an ultralearner. The challenge of learning new skills is that you think you already know how best to learn, as you did as a student, so you rerun old routines and old ways of solving problems. To counter that, Ultralearning offers powerful strategies to break you out of those mental ruts and introduces new training methods to help you push through to higher levels of retention. Scott H. Young incorporates the latest research about the most effective learning methods and the stories of other ultralearners like himself—among them Benjamin Franklin, chess grandmaster Judit Polgár, and Nobel laureate physicist Richard Feynman, as well as a host of others, such as little-known modern polymath Nigel Richards, who won the French World Scrabble Championship—without knowing French. Young documents the methods he and others have used to acquire knowledge and shows that, far from being an obscure skill limited to aggressive autodidacts, ultralearning is a powerful tool anyone can use to improve their career, studies, and life. Ultralearning explores this fascinating subculture, shares a proven framework for a successful ultralearning project, and offers insights into how you can organize and exe - cute a plan to learn anything deeply and quickly, without teachers or budget-busting tuition costs. Whether the goal is to be fluent in a language (or ten languages), earn the equivalent of a college degree in a fraction of the time, or master multiple tools to build a product or business from the ground up, the principles in Ultralearning will guide you to success.

History Teaches Us to Resist

Book Description

Historian and civil rights activist proves how progressive movements can flourish even in conservative times. Despair and mourning after the election of an antagonistic or polarizing president, such as Donald Trump, is part of the push-pull of American politics. But in this incisive book, historian Mary Frances Berry shows that resistance to presidential administrations has led to positive change and the defeat of outrageous proposals, even in challenging times. Noting that all presidents, including ones considered progressive, sometimes require massive organization to affect policy decisions, Berry cites Indigenous peoples’ protests against the Dakota pipeline during Barack Obama’s administration as a modern example of successful resistance built on earlier actions. Beginning with Franklin D. Roosevelt, Berry discusses that president’s refusal to prevent race discrimination in the defense industry during World War II and the subsequent March on Washington movement. She analyzes Lyndon Johnson, the war in Vietnam, and the antiwar movement and then examines Ronald Reagan’s two terms, which offer stories of opposition to reactionary policies, such as ignoring the AIDS crisis and retreating on racial progress, to show how resistance can succeed. The prochoice protests during the George H. W. Bush administration and the opposition to Bill Clinton’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, as well as his budget cuts and welfare reform, are also discussed, as are protests against the war in Iraq and the Patriot Act during George W. Bush’s presidency. Throughout these varied examples, Berry underscores that even when resistance doesn’t achieve all the goals of a particular movement, it often plants a seed that comes to fruition later. Berry also shares experiences from her six decades as an activist in various movements, including protesting the Vietnam War and advocating for the Free South Africa and civil rights movements, which provides an additional layer of insight from someone who was there. And as a result of having served in five presidential administrations, Berry brings an insider’s knowledge of government. History Teaches Us to Resist is an essential book for our times which attests to the power of resistance. It proves to us through myriad historical examples that protest is an essential ingredient of politics, and that progressive movements can and will flourish, even in perilous times.

Dr. Blumenfeld warns: Most parents wait until their child is having difficulty at school before they think of providing remediation. Sometimes the child is so far behind, so confused, so frustrated by not learning in the first two grades, that the remedial program looks long and difficult. However, proper tutoring at the preschool level or in the first two grades, as a preventive measure, can make sure that the child has the foundation on which to build achievement. How To Tutor provides parents and teachers with a complete instructional program: step-by-step lesson plans in the Three R's. It originally was to help public school students. Since then the continued decline in many public schools made HOMESCHOOLING much more important. Homeschool families discovered what a gem this book is for them.
