Sticker Shock

Book Description

Sticker Shock is a book that takes a look at a very specific form of protest that was taking place in the East Village of New York City during the days of the 2004 Republican Convention. As I made my way through the city during the days leading up to the convention I noticed a particular voice peppered on the walls, parking meters, street signs, and lamp posts of my neighborhood. This dialogue reached a crescendo as the convention moved into town. The voice became so loud I was comelled at the very least to document these very pointed and cretive stickers for my own historical record and interest. As the collection of these photographs began to grow a very distinctive narrative thread began to emerge. The assembled narrative became Sticker Shock. It is a project meant to disseminate a voice that simply may not have been hard outside its little corner of the world. A voice desperately calling out for help. A voice desperately calling out for change. Matthew Kraus (author, photographer, designer)

Faces of Tradition

Book Description

In this revealing cultural study, dozens of ancient weavers and the landscapes that they occupy in the Cusco region of the Andes are vividly portrayed through personal stories and life experiences, bringing to life the decades of endurance, skill, fortitude, and natural pride honed from the time-honored traditions of the region and its people. Some of the storytellers featured here include Pitumarca's Timoteo Ccarita, who became so interested in the old textiles he found on his own travels that he re-created tapestry techniques from sight; Leonardo Quispe, who single-handedly rescued and revived the techniques of ikat-style tied-warp dyeing (watay) in his community of Santa Cruz de Sallac; and Cipriana Mamani, who remembers that in her town of Accha Alta, their finely woven textiles had many lives and were repurposed for use over and over again. Intimate photographs capture each of the elders, some of whom had never seen a picture of themselves or even looked in a mirror, revealing the life, strength, character, and experience of these men and women.
