A Topical Analysis of Advanced American History With Library References for Teachers and Students (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Topical Analysis of Advanced American History With Library References for Teachers and Students A comprehensive study of history includes more than the mere description of a people's achievements or progress; it also includes a study of the conditions that made possible certain achievements, and the means used to attain certain results. The study of history is not to learn facts simply as facts, but to understand the causes and results of the great movements in the life of a people. Such a study of history cannot be made by the use of one brief text-book; outside reading is neces sary. A nation's history cannot be told in a few hun dred pages, hence the text-book must be supplemented by the use of reference books. The number need not be large; a few well selected volumes will answer. The Topical Analysis is meant to both assist in gaining a comprehensive understanding of history, and to direct the reading outside the text-book used by the class. A trial of this plan of the study of history will soon con Vince any teacher and class of its merits over the one book method. The use of a well selected library adds interest to the work, both in the preparation of the les son and in the recitation. The library references given do not pretend to be exhaustive, but consist of the best High School text-books and the smaller reference books. New American History and Government Outlines (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from New American History and Government Outlines History is the study of the life of a people. "History is the biography of a society." "History is the essence of innumerable biographies." "Through the ages one increasing purpose runs." "The present is the fruit of the past and the germs of the future." "History knows not if, and might have been is a form of words unwritten in her book of phrases." - Ridpath. Europe Before the Discovery of America Peoples supposed to have visited America before 1492: Chinese, Egyptians. Phoenicians and Greeks. Northmen, 1000. Events hindering further visits: Invasions of Goths, Vandals and Huns, 350 to 476. Establishment of new nations. Conquest among nations. Lack of geographical knowledge. Causes leading to a revival of interest in new lands: Commercial ambition. Religious zeal. The crusades. The renaissance. What ancient Europe sent to the East: Metals, wood, pitch, woolen cloth, linen, black lead, wine and glassware. What ancient Europe brought from the East: Silks, cotton cloth and other fine dry goods. Dye woods and drugs. Precious stones and ivory. Spices and perfumes. Cities which controlled trade with the East: Venice, by way of the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Indian ocean. Genoa, by way of Bosporus and Black Sea, and then by caravan to the East. Antioch, by way of Euphrates valley and Persian gulf. What changed trade routes: In 1453 the Turks captured Constantinople and refused to let the ships of other nations pass through the Bosporus. This closed Genoa's route, gave Venice a monopoly and made a new route desirable. New routes tried: Passage around Africa by Diaz, a Portuguese sailor, who succeeded in sailing around the south cape, which he named Cape of Storms, but the name was changed to Cape of Good Hope by King John of Portugal. Columbus' plan: To sail west until he reached China or India. "The great canon of history is its continuity." History of the United States

Book Description

Excerpt from History of the United States: Or Republic of America AT 9. Time when the accumulated mass of knowledge is great, beyond the human capacity, service is done to science, by clear ar rangement and devices addressed to the eye. If the faculties are en abled to seize and hold fast the frame-work of an important subject, future facts will naturally find and keep their own place in the mind, and the whole subject rest there in philosophical order. Not only is this important, as respects the particular study thus ac quired; but as regards intellectual habits and general improvement. To accomplish these ends, with regard to the history of the Uni ted States, is one of the main objects of the present work. Its plan is chronographically exhibited in front of the title page. The maps, included between the periods of the work, coincide in time with the branches of the subject; and the sketches on the maps picture the events there expressed in words. But most minds find it dificult to remember dates, though ever so well arranged; and hence experienced educationists recommend that the memory should not in this respect be overtaxed; but that dates should rather be kept at hand in books, to be consulted as occasion requires. Hence, the importance of arrangements in printed works, by which dates may stand prominent, and be easily found. A cur sory glance at the chronological table, and along the margin of this work, may satisfy the observer that this task has been executed with faithfulness.
