This report describes the substance of the various interventions implemented by the HSRC and its donor partners in Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe, as part of the research-driven, multi-country and multi-site intervention project on orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), funded by the WK Kellogg Foundation. The report provides information on what is happening on the ground and also the basic data required to develop 'models of best practice'. It is organised according to the project's four focus areas: home-based, child-centred development programmes; family and household support programmes; strengthening of community-support systems and HIV/AIDS awareness, advocacy and policy programmes, reported by country. The main purpose of the OVC project is to develop 'models of best practice' that will facilitate the development of community-driven strategies for responding to the increasing burden of OVC in Africa.




Pastoral Counseling for Orphans and Vulnerable Children

The existence of orphans is as inevitable to most African cities and the world as it is death. These orphans are caused by the death of one or both parents due to various reasons, including the scourge of HIV and AIDS. Being orphans, most of them are vulnerable to difficult lives because they have nobody to fend for them and take care of their lives. They lack adequate food, living expenses, school fees, and care since their current guardians are also in adverse economic situations. In such situations, orphans end up living a life of hopelessness and trauma, which makes them deeply remember their dead parents and the care they received from them before death. Following the vulnerable situation of most orphans, this book, through a study done in the Tanzanian context, challenges churches to extend their counseling and caring ministries to Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC). It purports that the use of narrative approach is the most effective way to enter into the world of vulnerable children in order to provide pastoral counseling to them. This approach helps pastoral counselors to use life stories, proverbs, biblical narratives, plays, arts, songs, riddles, poems, symbols, and images as healing and coping mechanisms for OVC. Therefore, this book is helpful not only to churches and their ministry to orphans and vulnerable children, but also to those who care for orphans in their homes. Moreover, it will be helpful to children who live in adverse conditions worldwide to find ways to cope with their situations through the stories of children used inside this book.

Psychosocial Support To Orphans and Vulnerable Children

The experience of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in witnessing their parents going through illness and eventual death is a traumatic one. These children also have the challenge of adjusting to and coping with sometimes little known family members who take over the responsibility of caring for them. It is on this basis that OVC thus need effective psychosocial care and support services that can address such situations. This study was undertaken in Mogoditshane and Tlokweng in Botswana in 2007. In particular the study set out to identify the psychosocial needs of OVC and to determine factors that facilitate the provision of psychosocial services to OVC and factors that inhibit or discourage the provision of such support. The study also intended to identify measures through which families, households, teachers, social workers and other support structures could cope in providing psychosocial support services OVC. The study used qualitative methods. Systematic and purposive sampling criteria were used to select the respondents. The respondents consisted of OVC, parents/guardians, guidance and counseling teachers, social workers, policy makers and other stakeholders

A Situational Analysis of Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Four Districts of South Africa

In 2002, the Human Sciences Research Council was commissioned by the WK Kellogg Foundation to develop and implement a five-year intervention project focusing on orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in southern Africa. In collaboration with several partner organizations, the project currently focuses on how children, families and communities in Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe are coping with the impact of HIV/AIDS. The aim of the project is to develop models of best practise so as to enhance and improve support structures for OVC in the southern African region as a whole. This report forms part of a series that examines the work undertaken as part of the Kellogg OVC Intervention Project from 2002 to 2005.




Pediatric Palliative Care: Global Perspectives

The first of its kind, this book describes pediatric palliative care in more than 23 countries. Each region in the world is covered and countries included are both resource poor and rich. Authors are multidisciplinary and regarded nationally and internationally in their field.
