The Poly, 1914 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Poly, 1914 In the preparation of this book we have endeavored to make it a souvenir, not altogether for the students of this year, but for those of the past years, and for those that are yet to come. We have been seriously handicapped by being compelled by unusual circumstances, to await the beginning of the work of editing the annual until late in the year, though we make no apology for that. While it has been a laborious task to compile the book, it has indeed been a pleasant one, and it is the earnest hope of the editors that those who read it may have imbued again into their very beings, the spirit of the dear old Poly. The Crescent, 1914 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Crescent, 1914 Five years ago the Crescent Society of the St Joseph High School pre sented the first edition of the annual known as the Crescent. The enterprise was not very successful, and was discontinued; so it remained for the class of 1914 to continue the work with great hope and confidence of its success. We hope that we may have improved upon that first annual to some degree, though we realize that ours cannot be infallible, and that many more Crescent annuals must be published before a perfect one can be formed. There is an old story of a little page in the hall of a great Knight, who desired to prove himself worthy of knighthood. One evening, while pondering how he could best attain his desire, he heard a call afar off telling him to keep the compass needle of his soul true to the north star of his great ambition, and that although his trials would be many, in the end he could not fail to succeed. He set out full of hope, but he did not realize how hard the road would be and how often he would be attacked by the monsters: discouragement and despair; but his steadfast purpose helped him to overcome these perils, and the day finally came wh'en he could at last say, I have attained success. Excerpt from The Camosun, Vol. 6: April, 1914 It was most amusing to watch the vendors-follow the passengers to the wharf, some even, in small boats to the steamer, offering their wares on a rapidly sliding scale, so that objects that were on first demand $2 or $3, quickly dropped to three for 50 cents. The Focus

Book Description

Excerpt from The Focus: January, 1914 Since this investigation was made, the amended Vir ginia law went into effect making an age limit of fourteen with an exception for children of dependent parents, who were allowed to go to work as early as twelve years. These children were employed in all kinds of mills, cotton, knit ting, woolen, and silk mills, glass factories, shoe factories, cigar, cigarette and tobacco factories, and many other factories, including those for the manufacture of shirts, overalls, candy, boxes, furniture and trunks. In almost all of these factories, because of the enforcement of the Child Labor Law, the children universally said they were fourteen years of age. To all appearances, however, many of these children were employed under the age of fourteen. As many of the factories, however, do not em ploy children under the age limit, the passage of the law really has accomplished something.
