Tales From Irish History (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Tales From Irish History The children Of Usnach dwelt with King Cormac in his great palace Of Emania, where assembled warriors famed in annals of war, and poets who chanted their exploits, and musicians who accompanied the lays of the poets on the harp. The king's room was in the front of the house, and was long enough for thirty warriors. It was ornamented with silver and bronze, and carbuncles and precious stones, so that day and night were equally light therein. A gong Of silver hung behind the king, suspended from the roof-tree, and when he struck it with his silver wand with three silver apples, all the men of Ulster were silent. A Land of Heroes

Book Description

Excerpt from A Land of Heroes: Stories From Early Irish History Who the authors of these Tales were is unknown. It is generally accepted that what we now possess is the growth of family or tribal histories, which, from being transmitted down, from generation to generation, give us fair accounts of actual events. The Tales that are here given are only a few out of very many hundreds embedded in the vast quantity of Old Gaelic manuscripts hidden away in the libraries of nearly all the countries of Europe, as well as those that are treasured in the Royal Irish Academy and Trinity College, Dublin. An idea of the extent of these manuscripts may be gained by the statement of one, who perhaps had the fullest knowledge of them - the late Professor O'Curry, - in which he says that the portion of them (so far as they have been examined) relating to Historical Tales would extend to upwards of 4000 pages of large size. Tales of Irish Life (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Tales of Irish Life The following Tales, with others, were written many years ago, before I became a resident of Hongkong, and when I had more leisure to devote to literary pursuits than I have since had; they were all, however, written more or less hurriedly in fact, during intervals between the hours of professional duty, usually devoted to exercise and relaxation. All of them, save The Story of an Orange Lodge, appeared from time to time in periodicals of the day. The story named was published in a separate volume in 1864; my object in writing it being, to decry the Orange Confederation, which I then thought, and still consider, a senseless and mischievous organization, alike disgraceful to its members as to Ireland. Conscious as I am of all their faults and 1mper fections, I have reproduced some of these tales in this volume, for private circulation only: they serve to recall younger and happier days, and should their perusal afford the reader a small share of the pleasure their production has given me, I shall be well repaid for my trouble.
