Aggregates in Concrete

Book Description

Bringing together in one volume the latest research and information, this book provides a detailed guide to the selection and use of aggregates in concrete. After an introduction defining the purpose and role of aggregates in concrete, the authors present an overview of aggregate sources and production techniques, followed by a detailed study of their physical, mechanical and chemical properties. This knowledge is then applied to the use of aggregates in both plastic and hardened concretes, and in the overall mix design. Special aggregates and their applications are discussed in detail, as are the current main specifications, standards and tests.

Asphalts in Road Construction

Book Description

This is a useful guide to all facets of asphalt technology as applied to the construction and maintenance of highways and reflects the very best of UK asphalt and pavement technology. It covers all aspects of fully flexible road construction from foundation design through to surface treatment. The book also covers new materials.

Bituminous Mixtures in Road Construction

Book Description

Every year more than 30 million tonnes of bituminous mixtures are laid in the UK in the course of maintenance and improvements of the road network. However, much of the technology associated with road construction and maintenance has never been published - until now. Bituminous mixtures in road construction has been published as the definitive guide to blacktop and addresses the theoretical and practical aspects of the design, manufacture and laying of bituminous mixtures. Written by a team of leading experts, the book provides up-to-the-minute thinking in materials specification, test methods and harmonisation of standards and covers all aspects of fully flexible road construction from foundation design through to surface treatment. In one handy volume, Bituminous mixtures in road construction presents the best of British expertise and will prove to be an essential guide for all engineers working on the construction and maintenance of highways.

Highways, Fourth Edition

Book Description

A comprehensive textbook on all aspects of road engineering, from the planning stages through to the design, construction and maintenance of road pavements, this edition has been expanded and updated to take into account developments in the field.

Lea's Chemistry of Cement and Concrete

Book Description

Lea's Chemistry of Cement and Concrete deals with the chemical and physical properties of cements and concretes and their relation to the practical problems that arise in manufacture and use. As such it is addressed not only to the chemist and those concerned with the science and technology of silicate materials, but also to those interested in the use of concrete in building and civil engineering construction. Much attention is given to the suitability of materials, to the conditions under which concrete can excel and those where it may deteriorate and to the precautionary or remedial measures that can be adopted. First published in 1935, this is the fourth edition and the first to appear since the death of Sir Frederick Lea, the original author. Over the life of the first three editions, this book has become the authority on its subject. The fourth edition is edited by Professor Peter C. Hewlett, Director of the British Board of Agrement and visiting Industrial Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Dundee. Professor Hewlett has brought together a distinguished body of international contributors to produce an edition which is a worthy successor to the previous editions.

8th RILEM International Symposium on Testing and Characterization of Sustainable and Innovative Bituminous Materials

Book Description

This work presents the results of RILEM TC 237-SIB (Testing and characterization of sustainable innovative bituminous materials and systems). The papers have been selected for publication after a rigorous peer review process and will be an invaluable source to outline and clarify the main directions of present and future research and standardization for bituminous materials and pavements. The following topics are covered: - Characterization of binder-aggregate interaction - Innovative testing of bituminous binders, additives and modifiers - Durability and aging of asphalt pavements - Mixture design and compaction analysis - Environmentally sustainable materials and technologies - Advances in laboratory characterization of bituminous materials - Modeling of road materials and pavement performance prediction - Field measurement and in-situ characterization - Innovative materials for reinforcement and interlayer systems - Cracking and damage characterization of asphalt pavements - Recycling and re-use in road pavements This is the proceedings of the RILEM SIB2015 Symposium (Ancona, Italy, October 7-9, 2015).

Advances in Aggregates and Armourstone Evaluation

Book Description

The maintenance and upgrading of our built environment, including large sections of coastal defences, relies heavily on natural construction materials. The text aims to highlight a range of pressing research issues in natural construction materials of direct relevance to an industry facing growing pressures for environmental sustainability and standardization of product quality within Europe. Tests and specifications given in the forthcoming Eurostandards for aggregates and armourstones are considered and correlated with older more widely used tests, including those which could impact upon current road safety. This text should be useful to: aggregate and amourstone suppliers and users; civil and engineering geologists; quarry companies; and Local and County Authority engineers and coastal engineers.

Concrete in Coastal Structures

Book Description

Describing the nature of the marine environment and the effects of man-made structures on the behaviour of the sea, this books deals with hydraulic design, the material properties of concrete and the design and specification of structures for coastal environments.

Alternate Polish Value and Soundness Specifications for Bituminous Coarse Aggregates

Book Description

Polish value and 5-cycle magnesium sulfate soundness are the primary quality requirements in current Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) specifications for bituminous coarse aggregate sources in two critical categories - (I) aggregates with high polish value but poor skid performance, and (II) aggregates with low polish value but good performance. This report summarizes the background and deficiencies of the current polish value specification and test procedures.
