Book Description
Excerpt from Documents and Proceedings Relating to the Formation and Progress of a Board in the City of New York: For the Emigration, Preservation, and Improvement, of the Aborigines of America, July 22, 1829 I have communicated with the Secretary of War, on the proposed organization of an association in New York, having for its exclusive object, the colonization and preservation of our Indians; and requested permission to transmit, for the information of those who may feel an interest in this great work, a cow of his letter to a Delegation of Cherokees recently at Washington, in which is an exposition of the views of the Executive on the rights of the Indians, to the exercise of sovereignty within the States and which also dis closes the views and feelings of the Executive in regard to these hapless people, generally. With no other restriction than that, he does not wish his letter published. The Secretary authorizes me, in compliance with my request, to send to you a copy. You will receive it herewith.
