The Anatomy, Physiology, and Diseases of the Bones and Joints (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Anatomy, Physiology, and Diseases of the Bones and Joints It had been my intention, originally, to illustrate some of the most important diseases of the bones and joints, as well as some of the principal apparatus used in the treat ment of fractures, by means of plates; but upon more ma ture reflection, it was thought best, at least for the present, to omit them, as the expense of the work would thereby be materially enhanced, and probably prevent many of those, for whom it is chiefly designed, from possessing it. Diseases of the Bones and Joints

Book Description

Excerpt from Diseases of the Bones and Joints: Clinical Studies In whatever tissues of the body one studies the changes produced by the tubercle bacillus the histological picture is practically always the same. Differences in structure of these tissues may render one region of the body a little less or a little more resistant to invasion than another, but the virulence of the invading organism and the relative constitutional immunity of the patient are of more import ance in this connection than the Character of tissues invaded. Lectures on Diseases of Bones and Joints (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Lectures on Diseases of Bones and Joints Acquire knowledge, however, by this kind of teaching is a slow process, so tedious that few students appreciate the advantage of watching a patient day by day to his recovery, or to the examination which is made after death. Nevertheless, there can be no question that experience acquired in this way is the only true foundation upon which a young medical man can safely rely during his professional career. My aim has been to lead my pupils, by the exercise of their sight, touch, and hearing, to gain a practical knowledge of surgery, which in systematic lectures or books they can only imperfectly receive from the description of others. Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body, Vol. 2 of 3

Book Description

Excerpt from Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body, Vol. 2 of 3: Containing the Anatomy of the Bones, Muscles, and Joints; And the Heart and Arteries Until the present day this fault has pervaded all the great theories, that in describing our vessels physicians have continued to use the language of hydraulics and hydrostatics; of a philosophy applicable only to rigid tubes: in short, in describing the living system, they have forgotten that it was endowed with life. Injuries Diseases of the Bones and Joints

Book Description

Excerpt from Injuries Diseases of the Bones and Joints: Their Differential Diagnosis by Means of the Roentgen Rays The Technical side of roentgenology has been so ably described by various author that mention of it is more repetition, therefore, we have in this book, confined our selves to the study of the finished product - the plate. Our object then, is to show that roentgenology is not a picture process, but a medical procedure based upon careful analysis and logical deductions from the shadows observed upon a plate and the translation of these shadows into pathological terms. The constituent parts of the normal bones and their functions have been discussed; and with these as a basis, the lesions have been studied and correlated with the gross pathological findings of the operating and autopsy rooms. Age and sex play such an important role in the production, character and situation of the lesion that we have linked them up with the x-ray plate in arriving at a diagnostic conclusion. Inasmuch as the pathological findings and classifications in certain types of bone and joint lesions are not yet thoroughly established, we may state that in the same way our interpretations of the x-ray shadows of these lesions also may be subject to revision in the light of further pathological investigations. No attempt has been made to give a bibliography, as this book is the result of our observations in the clinic of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. In this connection we wish to express our appreciation for the assistance given us by the x-ray Staff of the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
