A veteran tells his story of suffering from traumatic brain injury—and finally finding relief. Former Green Beret Andrew Marr served multiple tours of duty in Afghanistan—incurring dozens of traumatic brain injuries. It just about destroyed him and his family, and almost cost him his life. After the military medical establishment repeatedly failed him, Marr called upon the initiative and determination that had served him as a warrior—and eventually triumphed with the help of an innovative doctor. As thousands of veterans, athletes, accident victims, and other TBI sufferers wallow in the wake of inadequate treatment—and in many tragic cases, turn to suicide—this book offers new hope and explains the science behind this very specific kind of healing, and why conventional protocols fail. “Takes us from the battlefields of Afghanistan to Andrew’s unrelenting battle to be whole again . . . a raw reminder that even in a brain injured state, the mind can clearly triumph.” —Joe Rogan

Since the beginning of time, the archangels have longed to know true love. When four female angels were created for the four archangels, Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, and Azrael, a chaos spurred by jealousy erupted, and the archesses were secreted away to Earth. The four favored archangels followed, prompting a search that has lasted millennia... As the Angel of Death, Azrael could never be like his brothers. While the others fell to Earth in human form, Azrael descended as a vampire. Today, as the lead singer of a popular rock band, he keeps his true nature hidden--a powerful darkness constantly at odds with his angelic self. Beneath his mask, Azrael holds onto the hope that he will one day find the archess who will complete him. At his brother Gabriel's wedding, Azrael set his golden eyes on Sophie Bryce, the maid of honor. He is certain she is his destined mate, and will do anything to make her his. But Sophie is unaware of her archess identity, and is haunted by unspeakable demons of her own. When supernatural forces emerge from the shadows, threatening Sophie, Azrael is the only one who can protect her. But to do it, he must reveal his true, savage self.

In Celluloid Saviours, the author analyses a corpus of US films dating from the silent era that she calls film blanc. In these fantasy films a guardian spirit with extraordinary powers suspends the ordinary, known laws of time and space, and a main character reforms himself or herself in life-changing ways. The author argues that the historical pattern of film blanc relates to the rise and fall of liberal and reform thought in US politics, specifically to conceptions of human nature as a tabula rasa. This conception is evident both in the early feature films featuring angels such as Chaplin’s The Kid and much later examples such as the 1980s box office hit, Trading Places. She argues that this narrative tradition runs from Hollywood’s beginnings to the present day and is foreshadowed in the English ghost stories of Charles Dickens. The classic era of film blanc is epitomised in the enduringly popular film, It’s a Wonderful Life. More recent examples of narrative form analysed by Caston include The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

GOOD OMENS meets FANGIRL in this urban fantasy dramedy about good, evil, friendship, and the end of the world.Iofiel is an ideal candidate to become a guardian angel, and help steer humans away from sin: she's helpful, cheery, and utterly loyal. And, as the 'angel of beauty', it's not like she has anything better to do.Heaven and Hell long ago ran out of space: there are too many humans these days, so both have come to a shaky truce - one school sheltered in the forests of Canada, hidden from humanity, where their young can study. All seems well for Iofiel's first days at university - her Archangel roommate is a bit uptight, and dealing with demons feels weird- but when a picked on demon confesses he's too nervous to pursue his true passion of soul stealing... Iofiel promises she'll major in it with him!So much for being a proper angel. Her helpful impulse has repercussions that shake the school, and may just change the world forever. Or just end it.Because that's a possibility too.
