For more than 30 years, we have taught limb correction surgery at the annual Baltimore Limb Deformity Course (www.DeformityCourse.com). We have used these hands-on experiences with our students to guide us when creating this book. The Art of Limb Alignment is a concise guide for beginners starting on their journey to master the art of limb alignment. Understanding limb alignment and malalignment is a critical task for surgeons who treat lower extremity deformities. The first task is to characterize the deformity: Is the bone angulated? In what direction is the bone angulated? What is the level of the deformity? Where is the apex of the deformity? What is the magnitude of the deformity? Is the bone short? Is it rotated on its axis? All these questions must be answered before correcting the problem. In Chapter 10 of this tenth edition, digital planning software (Bone Ninja app, available as an iPad app teaching tool through the App Store) is used to show the reverse planning method for femoral deformity. Reverse planning using manual methods was introduced by Rainer Baumgart in 2009. In a normal femur, the anatomic and mechanical axes deviate from each other by 5˚ to 7˚. By using reverse planning to "begin with the end in mind," the surgeon will minimize risk of unwanted mechanical axis deviation secondary this anatomic-mechanical axis divergence. In Chapter 13, the principles of MAP the ABCs are applied to common conditions seen in foot and ankle deformities. Foot and ankle deformity correction can be challenging to treat due to the compensation from the joints within the foot. This chapter shows step-by-step analysis and correction of four deformities: a pes planus foot with hallux valgus, cavus foot, rockerbottom midfoot, and ankle varus malunion. Methods of the Alignment-Relay Technique for Nanosystems

This thesis addresses the problem of improving the alignment of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in transistor applications, taking a unique approach using iptycenes acting as molecular tweezers in combination with a liquid crystal solvent. As part of a project to test the effectiveness of a multi-step method, the so-called Alignment Relay Technique (ART), this work contributed evidence for the selectivity and stability of ART, as well as providing the first proof-of-concept that ART can be used to create CNT field-effect transistors (FETs). The thesis effectively explains and illustrates the chemical synthesis of the tweezers, the concept and actualization of the technique, the various factors observed to influence deposition and selectivity, along with material fabrication using both photolithography and electron beam lithography. This research advances knowledge of transistors and expands the applications of small organic molecules in the field of materials science. Particular highlights of this thesis include: an extensive review of ART, its advantages, and limitations; development of new material chemistry methods for the optimization of semiconducting CNT selectivity; and a comprehensive exploration of fabrication and characterization of CNTFETs for future applications.

Machine Translation: From Real Users to Research

The previous conference in this series (AMTA 2002) took up the theme “From Research to Real Users”, and sought to explore why recent research on data-driven machine translation didn’t seem to be moving to the marketplace. As it turned out, the ?rst commercial products of the data-driven research movement were just over the horizon, andintheinterveningtwoyearstheyhavebeguntoappearinthemarketplace. Atthesame time,rule-basedmachinetranslationsystemsareintroducingdata-driventechniquesinto the mix in their products. Machine translation as a software application has a 50-year history. There are an increasing number of exciting deployments of MT, many of which will be exhibited and discussed at the conference. But the scale of commercial use has never approached the estimates of the latent demand. In light of this, we reversed the question from AMTA 2002, to look at the next step in the path to commercial success for MT. We took user needs as our theme, and explored how or whether market requirements are feeding into research programs. The transition of research discoveries to practical use involves te- nicalquestionsthatarenotassexyasthosethathavedriventheresearchcommunityand research funding. Important product issues such as system customizability, computing resource requirements, and usability and ?tness for particular tasks need to engage the creativeenergiesofallpartsofourcommunity,especiallyresearch,aswemovemachine translation from a niche application to a more pervasive language conversion process. Thesetopicswereaddressedattheconferencethroughthepaperscontainedinthesep- ceedings, and even more speci?cally through several invited presentations and panels.
