White Men Challenging Racism is a collection of first-person narratives chronicling the compelling experiences of thirty-five white men whose efforts to combat racism and fight for social justice are central to their lives. Based on interviews conducted by Cooper Thompson, Emmett Schaefer, and Harry Brod, these engaging oral histories tell the stories of the men’s antiracist work. While these men discuss their accomplishments with pride, they also talk about their mistakes and regrets, their shortcomings and strategic blunders. A foreword by James W. Loewen, author of Lies My Teacher Told Me, provides historical context, describing antiracist efforts undertaken by white men in America during past centuries. Ranging in age from twenty-six to eighty-six, the men whose stories are presented here include some of the elder statesmen of antiracism work as well as members of the newest generation of activists. "Each of the major documents from Mesopotamia indicates the presence of many, if not all, of the following factors: provenance in an historical period experiencing dramatic political developments; a decisive battle where the presence of the god(s), expressed by ... the vanguard motif, is claearly the victorious force defeating the foe; a resultant emphasis on the supremacy of one monarch, with the corollary "exaltation" of a major deity. In this way motifs of divine presence are also intimately connected with the human leader ... The vanguard motif is also frequently accompanied by a motif expressing the fearful reaction of the enemies of the god and/or king. Less often explicit in the literary texts ... is the use of physical objects as representations of divine presence in battle. ... Their loss and subsequent return are often important signs of the religio-political events that form the background of specific texts. ... Smith contends that to understand what it meant to be northern or southern, slave or free--to understand sectionalism and the attitudes toward modernity that led to the Civil War--we must consider how antebellum Americans comprehended the sounds and silences they heard. Smith explores how northerners and southerners perceived the sounds associated with antebellum developments including the market revolution, industrialization, westward expansion, and abolitionism. In northern modernization, southern slaveholders heard the noise of the mob, the din of industrialism, and threats to what they considered their quiet, orderly way of life; in southern slavery, northern abolitionists and capitalists heard the screams of enslaved labor, the silence of oppression, and signals of premodernity that threatened their vision of the American future. Sectional consciousness was profoundly influenced by the sounds people attributed to their regions. And as sectionalism hardened into fierce antagonism, it propelled the nation toward its most earsplitting conflict, the Civil War.
