This introductory statistics textbook for non-statisticians covers basic principles, concepts, and methods routinely used in applied research. What sets this text apart is the incorporation of the many advances and insights from the last half century when explaining basic principles. These advances provide a foundation for vastly improving our ability to detect and describe differences among groups and associations among variables and provide a deeper and more accurate sense of when basic methods perform well and when they fail. Assuming no prior training, Wilcox introduces students to basic principles and concepts in a simple manner that makes these advances and insights, as well as standard ideas and methods, easy to understand and appreciate.

Shanti S. Gupta has made pioneering contributions to ranking and selection theory; in particular, to subset selection theory. His list of publications and the numerous citations his publications have received over the last forty years will amply testify to this fact. Besides ranking and selection, his interests include order statistics and reliability theory. The first editor's association with Shanti Gupta goes back to 1965 when he came to Purdue to do his Ph.D. He has the good fortune of being a student, a colleague and a long-standing collaborator of Shanti Gupta. The second editor's association with Shanti Gupta began in 1978 when he started his research in the area of order statistics. During the past twenty years, he has collaborated with Shanti Gupta on several publications. We both feel that our lives have been enriched by our association with him. He has indeed been a friend, philosopher and guide to us.

This book acquaints readers with a range of techniques to help them effectively identify, record, map, analyze and report on patterns in various dimensions of human development (HD) with spatial scales down to the village level. It is impossible to capture HD at the local and global scale with only a single index, because differences in HD at the international scale are caused by ‘general’ factors, whereas local-scale differences are influenced by ‘specific’ factors. This book offers a variety of methods for scientifically mapping HD at any spatial scale. It covers how to rationally select variables; how to test the models; how to validate the results, and how to analyze them. For this purpose, it employs a case study on an Indian district. The socio-economic factors regulating the patterns of HD are now more complex than they were only a few decades ago, making it essential to incorporate newer models in order to successfully ‘replicate’ the real-world situation. Accordingly, the book offers essential methodological tools & techniques for mapping HD. It sheds new light on a handful of statistical multivariate analysis and machine learning algorithms that are rarely used in the social sciences when dealing with HD, yet have sound mathematical and statistical bases. These techniques can be successfully used for predictive analysis in the earth & natural sciences, decision sciences and management disciplines, and are equally effective in terms of capturing, predicting and projecting the composite HD ‘landscape.’ This book will especially benefit two groups of readers: firstly, HD practitioners who want to find out ‘why some areas are doing better than others’ by exploring the complex interactions of spatially linked variables with different HD parameters. And secondly, practitioners in other branches of the social sciences who are not concerned with HD but are looking for ‘hands-on training’ with techniques they can apply in their respective field of spatial investigations.

Data mining is the art and science of intelligent data analysis. By building knowledge from information, data mining adds considerable value to the ever increasing stores of electronic data that abound today. In performing data mining many decisions need to be made regarding the choice of methodology, the choice of data, the choice of tools, and the choice of algorithms. Throughout this book the reader is introduced to the basic concepts and some of the more popular algorithms of data mining. With a focus on the hands-on end-to-end process for data mining, Williams guides the reader through various capabilities of the easy to use, free, and open source Rattle Data Mining Software built on the sophisticated R Statistical Software. The focus on doing data mining rather than just reading about data mining is refreshing. The book covers data understanding, data preparation, data refinement, model building, model evaluation, and practical deployment. The reader will learn to rapidly deliver a data mining project using software easily installed for free from the Internet. Coupling Rattle with R delivers a very sophisticated data mining environment with all the power, and more, of the many commercial offerings.

In order to deal with the societal challenges novel technology plays an important role. For the advancement of technology, Department of Industrial and Production Engineering under the aegis of NIT Jalandhar is organizing an “International Conference on Industrial and Manufacturing Systems” (CIMS-2020) from 26th -28th June, 2020. The present conference aims at providing a leading forum for sharing original research contributions and real-world developments in the field of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems so as to contribute its share for technological advancements. This volume encloses various manuscripts having its roots in the core of industrial and production engineering. Globalization provides all around development and this development is impossible without technological contributions. CIMS-2020, gathered the spirits of various academicians, researchers, scientists and practitioners, answering the vivid issues related to optimisation in the various problems of industrial and manufacturing systems.

This volume is a sometimes serious and sometimes whimsical retrospective of Stata, its development, and its use over the last 30 years. The view from the inside opens with an essay by Bill Gould, Stata's president and cofounder, that discusses the challenges and concepts that guided the design and implementation of Stata. This is followed by an interview of Bill by Joe Newton that discusses Bill's early interest in computing, his early work on a program for matching prom dates in the days when you had to purchase time on computers, and further exploration of the guiding principles behind Stata. Finally, Sean Becketti, Stata's first employee, delves into the not-to-be-missed culture of Stata in its infancy. The view from the outside comprises 14 essays by prominent researchers and members of the Stata community. Most discuss Stata's use and evolution in disciplines such as behavioral sciences, business, economics, epidemiology, time series, political science, public health, public policy, veterinary epidemiology, and statistics. Some take a sweeping overview. Others are more intimate personal recollections. Mostly, we simply wanted to celebrate the relationship between Stata users and Stata software. We hope that this volume holds something interesting for everyone.
