This book treats the subject of sediment transport in the marine environment, covering transport of non-cohesive sediment by waves and current in- and outside the surf zone. It can be read independently, but a background in hydraulics and basic wave mechanics is required. It is intended for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. The primary aim of the book is to describe the physical processes of sediment transport and how to represent them in mathematical models. It does not present a large number of different formulae for the sediment transport rates under various conditions. The book can be divided in two main parts; in the first, the relevant hydrodynamic theory is described; in the second, sediment transport and morphological development are treated. The hydrodynamic part contains a review of elementary theory for water waves, chapters on the turbulent wave boundary layer and the turbulent interaction between waves and currents, and finally, surf zone hydrodynamics and wave driven currents. The part on sediment transport introduces the basic concepts (critical bed shear stress, bed load, suspended load and sheet layer, near-bed concentration, effect of sloping bed); it treats suspended sediment in waves and current and in the surf zone, and current and wave-generated bed forms. Finally, the modelling of cross-shore and long-shore sediment transport is described together with the development, of coastal profiles and coastlines.

This book is divided into four parts: Part 1 is entitled "A Short History of Sediment Transport"; Part 2 deals with the "Hydrodynamics of Fluid-Particle Systems"; Part 3 is concerned with the "Sediment Transport in Open Channels"; and Part 4 describes the "Sediment Transport in Closed Pipes." The intent of this book was to make each part as self-contained as possible which has made this an exceptional and successful textbook. The brief introduction preceding each part will help the reader become familiar with the topic. This book has been used successfully both as a classroom textbook and as a reference book by consultants involved with sediment transport.

Gravel-Bed Rivers: Processes, Tools, Environments presents a definitive review of current knowledge of gravel-bed rivers, derived from the 7th International Gravel-bed Rivers Workshop, the 5-yearly meeting of the world’s leading authorities in the field. Each chapter in the book has been specifically commissioned to represent areas in which recent progress has been made in the field. The topics covered also represent a coherent progression through the principal areas of the subject (hydraulics; sediment transport; river morphology; tools and methods; applications of science). Definitive review of the current knowledge of gravel-bed rivers Coverage of both fundamental and applied topics Edited by leading academics with contributions from key researchers Thoroughly edited for quality and consistency to provide coherent and logical progression through the principal areas of the subject.

The Third Edition Of This Book Recognises Two Important Developments That Have Taken Place In Recent Years.(1) Mathematical Modelling Of Alluvial River Processes, And(2) Environmental Aspects Relating To Sedimentation. Both Of These Factors Have Been Duly Considered In This Edition. With Its Detailed Analysis And Clear Presentation, This Book Would Be Extremely Useful For Practising Civil Engineers. It Would Also Serve As An Authoritative Reference Source For Graduate And Senior Undergraduate Civil Engineering Students.

From considerations of energy balance and of mechanical equilibrium, a mathematical expression is derived relating the rates of sediment transport as bedload and as suspended load to the expenditure of power by a statistically steady flow of water.
