The Composition and Date of Acts (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Composition and Date of Acts The hypothesis of a Semitic source ( or source) underlying more or less of the first half of Acts has commended itself to a few scholars. Similarly in his Apostelgeschichte, 1908, pp. 138, 186. See also Blass' very meager statement in his Philology of the Gospels (1898), 141, 193 f., 201, of his somewhat hastily conceived theory according to which Luke followed an Aramaic source in the first twelve chapters of Acts. But so far as I am aware, no one has ever attempted to point out speciffically Aramaic locutions in Acts. Nor has the search for Semitisms, of whatever sort, hitherto resulted in any fruitful discovery, A few doubtful examples have been adduced in support of still more doubtful conclusions; there has been no effort to collect and examine the material of this nature. New Commentary on Acts of Apostles, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from New Commentary on Acts of Apostles, Vol. 1 The composition of my first commentary on Acts was begun when I was about thirty years of age, and the work was published about four years later. The greater part of the writing was done amid the distractions of the first two years of our civil war, and the volume was issued in the autumn of 1863, when men's thoughts were turned away from religion to the events of the mighty struggle. The publication of a commentary under such circumstances was considered so hazardous, that it was not undertaken until the demand for it was tested by a call for subscribers in advance. The response to this call was unexpectedly encouraging, and the volume was issued in the inexpensive form which it has since retained. The sale of the old work, though never very large, has been continuous from the time of its publication till the present hour; and the author has received from time to time most gratifying assurances of the good it has done, both in furnishing needed instruction to many young preachers, and in teaching many other earnest souls "the way of the Lord more perfectly." The Acts

Book Description

Excerpt from The Acts: An Exposition In peace or war, in the past or present, no project has been so bold, no adventure so thrilling, as the enterprise of carrying the gospel to the whole world. The Acts tells how this work was begun, and how the good news was brought across the imperial provinces from Jerusalem to Rome, not by a single messenger or by individual effort, but by the rapid extension of the Christian Church. The book is a record of heroic achievement and inspired elo quence, a treasury of truths vital to believers, a manual of methods for evangelists and missionaries, and a witness to the unceasing activity of the living Christ and to the pres ent power of his divine Spirit. Those to whom the story is quite familiar will be the most eager to read it anew, for they know best its value and its charm. The Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 1 of 2

Book Description

Excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 1 of 2: Explained The materials of this book were collected in a course of academical instruction, and prepared for publication, in the first instance, With a view to the peculiar wants of ministers and students. But after the first chapter was in type, the writer was induced to recommence the work upon a new plan, in the hope of making it more generally hseful, by the reduction of its size, and the omission of all matter supposed to be interesting only to professional' or educated readers. This Will account for the prominence given to the English ver sion, the exclusion (for the most part) of the Greek text, and the absence of any detailed reference to other writers. It Will be found, however, that the constant subject of the exposition is the inspired original, and that one of its main objects is to perfect the translation. The Date of the Acts

Book Description

Excerpt from The Date of the Acts: And of the Synoptic Gospels One of the strongest arguments in favour of this identity is the argument from language and style. In my two earlier works (Luke the Physician and The Acts of the Apostles) I have presented this argument in full detail, and it is to be hoped have proved conclusively that the hypothesis of a difference of authors is untenable. We are here concerned not only with a striking agreement in the use of words, but with an agreement in syntax and style which is just as striking, and above all with an identity of interest which extends into the minutest details of the narrative, such as the literary treatment of persons, lands, cities, peoples, houses, dates, etc., and which shows itself even in similar instances of carelessness and petty discrepancy. But a certain number of critics still regard the proof as unsatisfactory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
