Excerpt from The Early History of the Town of Dexter The first fire engine was installed in Dexter in 1836, being followed in 1872 by a hook and ladder truck and in 1875 by the the two Button machines. Prior to the introduction of the water works in 1003, fire protect-ion was afforded the business and a portion of the residential section by iron pipes laid in the principal thoroughfares, with hydrants attached, through which water was forced by fire pumps connected with the woolen mill plants, the first fire pump being installed through public subscription and attached to Small's grist mill. Owing to these excellent precautions fires have been of infrequent occurrence and rarely has a fire spread outside of the building in which it originated.
