The Effects of Massage Intervention on the Relationship Between Parents and Their Infant Or Toddler with Special Needs

Book Description

The research question addressed in this Capstone is the following: How can massage improve the relationship between parents and their infant or toddler with special needs? The author examined the importance of touch on human development and how massage supports healthy physical and emotional development in young children. Important research completed by Dr. Tiffany Field at the University of Miami Touch Research Institute was explored. In this Capstone, a six-week study was conducted with five parents of infants or toddlers who have special needs. Infant massage techniques were taught and data was collected to determine how massage influences the parent-child relationship. The results indicated that massage intervention does improve the relationship between parents and their children through the numerous benefits it provides.

The Role of Touch in Early Emotional Development

Book Description

This dissertation explores the ancient art of infant massage and the ways in which clinicians can utilize this intervention to strengthen infant-parent attachment. Current research and theories on touch and development from a depth-oriented perspective are presented, including related concepts such as psychic skin, skin ego, and Winnicott's holding environment or handling. Using the hermeneutic method, the following questions are investigated: 1. Why is touch important for the infant's emotional development? 2. How have modern child-rearing theorists, particularly those influenced by behaviorism, affected the quality of infant-parent interactions, leading to a decrease in physical contact between infant and caregiver? 3. How can infant massage be used as an intervention to promote positive parent-infant touch and interaction? A review of the literature suggests benefits for the dyad, including increased mother-infant bonding (Field, 1995; Heller, 1997; Heart, 2003), increased pleasurable interactions on the part of mothers who have massaged their children (Field, Scafidi, & Schanberg, 1987), improved mood of depressed mothers engaging in an infant massage program (Field, Grizzle, Scafidi, Abrams, & Richardson, 1996), increased parenting skills (Szyndler & Bell 1992), and increased sensitivity to behavioral cues. This dissertation concludes with an outline of infant-parent psychotherapy models and the ways in which infant massage instruction can be incorporated into the models presented.

The Effects of Infant Massage on the Interactions Between High Risk Infants and Their Caregivers

Book Description

The purpose of this research study was to examine the effects of infant massage on the interactions between high risk infants and their caregivers. A population of nine high risk infants who received infant massage was compared to 14 high risk infants who did not receive infant massage. Both groups received intensive home-based services for one year from a public health nurse in Marion county, Oregon. The data collected and analyzed included demographic information, specific risk and environmental factors that placed the population at high risk for developmental delays or sudden infant death, measures of the quality of the caregiving environment (HOME), measures of the quality of interactions between caregiver and infant (NCAST scales), and a follow-up interview of 10 caregivers to answer specific questions concerning the infant's development and the quality of services received in the home. This study was designed to answer the research question: what are the relationships between risk and environmental factors, quality of the caregiving environment, infant massage intervention and infant-caregiver interaction. Statistical analyses (Pearson r correlations and ANCOVA) tested three hypotheses. Risk variables and the quality of the caregiving environment appeared to be similar for both the treatment and control groups. Results supported the conclusions that there were negative relationships between risk and environmental variables and infant-caregiver interactions; and that the quality of the caregiving environment was positively related to the interactions of infants and caregivers. Finally, the results were suggestive of positive effects for massage treatment on the interactions of caregiver and infant during routine feeding situations. Caregivers reported many positive benefits from massage training and rated the in-home intervention very highly in a telephone interview.

An Infant Massage Guidebook

Book Description

As we have read or been told about the history and the art of history, there was trepidation drilled daily into human beings, others orally and physically: Masters/others calling them names, "You slave, you nigger," except human beings with human feelings and bleeding flesh. Just like any other color human being, but their inhibitors keep them praying. However, a white man of a good heart by his nature wanted to or even tried to help a colored human being, they called him a nigger lover. Then he was treated just as bad as the colored people in that era. The colored people were not planted like a seed in the ground, and then grew up from the ground like roach nell com standing tall in the field. No, I am afraid we just did not get here that way. Oops! Sorry!

Parenting Matters

Book Description

Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.
