The Home Vegetable Garden (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Home Vegetable Garden Fig. 1. - Fall vegetable gardens grown by students at the University Farm, Davis. Almost all varieties of vegetables were planted the third week of August, and almost all were harvested before the middle of December. The varieties and crops grown were Snowball cauliflower, Copenhagen Market cabbage, Southern Curled mustard, Scotch Curled kale, Paris White Cos lettuce, New York lettuce, Chantenay carrots, Detroit Dark Red beets, Paoting Chinese cabbage, Purple Vienna kohlrabi, Large White rutabaga, Purple Top White Globe turnip, Savoy spinach, Prickly Winter spinach, green bunch onions from dry sets, and Bountiful beans. The garden should be located near a faucet or an irrigation line in order to insure an adequate supply of water. Most vegetables need considerable moisture to keep them growing and to make them good edible quality. It is also best to have the garden protected from the prevailing winds, especially if these are drying and severe. Proximity to large trees should be avoided, as most crops need full sunlight, and as the trees use the plant food and soil moisture for a considerable distance on all sides. Some crops, however, such as spinach and lettuce, do fairly well growing in partial shade, especially during the warm season. The Vegetable Garden, Vol. 32 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Vegetable Garden, Vol. 32 In recent years, gardening among the labor ing classes of the large towns and cities has been recommended as a means not only of reducing the cost of living but of providing pleasant and profitable employment for the wage-earner and his family, when other duties do not demand their attention. These ideas are excellent and worthy of consideration wherever conditions are favorable for successful gardening. Mil lions of families in towns, where there are min ing and manufacturing industries, might well devote a part of their yards to the growing of vegetables. By following the most intensive plans, such as are explained in the various chapters of this little book, a surprisingly large quantity of vege tables may be grown on a plot of ground of. A few hundred square feet. The results of a well-managed laboring man's garden will show in smaller monthly grocery bills. A-B-C of Vegetable Gardening (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A-B-C of Vegetable Gardening Another notion is, that in order to have a good garden a large amount of time and labor must be expended on it. Not so. A very small amount of systematized labor will be demanded by even a good-sized garden, if it is planned in such a manner that labor - sav ing tools can be used in its cultivation. If we look'back to the gardening days of fifty or even twenty-five years ago, when every thing was done at the hardest and the hand had to do a good share of the work that we now do with helpful implements, it is not to be wondered at that the old-time care of a garden discourages many from undertaking to have one. Happily those days are over, and with the gardening facilities of the present it is an easy matter to accomplish more in an hour than could be done then in a day. There is really no drudgery in gardening as it is done to - day. On the contrary, there is posi tive pleasure in the operation of the ma chinery which inventive genius has furnished for the up-to-date gardener's use.
