Days of Darkness

Book Description

" Among the darkest corners of Kentucky’s past are the grisly feuds that tore apart the hills of Eastern Kentucky from the late nineteenth century until well into the twentieth. Now, from the tangled threads of conflicting testimony, John Ed Pearce, Kentucky’s best known journalist, weaves engrossing accounts of six of the most notorior accounts to uncover what really happened and why. His story of those days of darkness brings to light new evidence, questions commonly held beliefs about the feuds, and us and long-running feuds—those in Breathitt, Clay Harlan, Perry, Pike, and Rowan counties. What caused the feuds that left Kentucky with its lingering reputation for violence? Who were the feudists, and what forces—social, political, financial—hurled them at each other? Did Big Jim Howard really kill Governor William Goebel? Did Joe Eversole die trying to protect small mountain landowners from ruthless Eastern mineral exploiters? Did the Hatfield-McCoy fight start over a hog? For years, Pearce has interviewed descendants of feuding families and examined skimpy court records and often fictional newspapeputs to rest some of the more popular legends.

Cast Iron Technology

Book Description

Cast Iron Technology presents a critical review of the nature of cast irons. It discusses the types of cast iron and the general purpose of cast irons. It also presents the history of the iron founding industry. Some of the topics covered in the book are the description of liquid metal state; preparation of liquid metal; process of melting; description of cupola melting and electric melting methods; control of composition of liquid metal during preparation; description of primary cast iron solidification structures; and thermal analysis of metals to determine its quality. Solidification science and the fundamentals of heat treatment are also discussed. An in-depth analysis of the hot quenching techniques is provided. The graphitization potential of liquid iron is well presented. A chapter is devoted to microstructural features of cast iron. The book can provide useful information to iron smiths, welders, students, and researchers.

Glorified Fasting

Book Description

Fasting, like prayer, is an integral part of the Word of God. To dispute this would be as foolish as denying that water is wet. In “Glorified Fasting,” Franklin Hall passionately explores the significance of fasting for Christians. He invites us to “STAND FAST” on this irrevocable tradition, which we have been taught in the Word. By doing so, we honor Jesus and allow His glory to shine forth. This volume seeks to popularize one of the most downtrodden Biblical subjects—the practice of fasting. Hall’s mission is to reestablish fasting’s rightful place in the Gospel, revealing its glorious aspects. As we delve into this tremendous portion of the Word, we discover an avenue to immense power and glory with Jesus. Fasting, praying, crying, and mourning for souls become our tools, wielded without selfish motives. By uniting as pillars of faith, we prepare for the last-day signs that approach us—tragedy, destruction, persecution—armed with an effective weapon for the glory of Jesus. However, Hall is clear: Fasting is not a cure-all for spiritual, moral, or bodily complaints. Instead, he emphasizes its importance to prevent God’s people from drifting away from the old-time faith and succumbing to modernism.

Castings

Book Description

This is the key publication for professionals and students in the metallurgy and foundry field. Fully revised and expanded, Castings Second Edition covers the latest developments in the understanding of the role of the liquid metal in controlling the properties of cast materials, and indeed, of all metallic materials that have started in the cast form. Practising foundry engineers, designers, and students will find the revealing insights into the behaviour of castings essential in developing their inderstanding and practice. John Campbell OBE is a leading international figure in the castings industry, with over four decades of experience. He is the originator of the Cosworth Casting Process, the pre-eminent production process for automobile cylinder heads and blocks. He is also co-inventor of both the Baxi Casting Process (now owned by Alcoa) developed in the UK, and the newly emerging Alotech Casting Process in the USA. He is Professor of Casting Technology at the University of Birmingham, UK. New edition of this internationally respected reference and textbook for engineers and students Develops understanding of the concepts and practice of casting operations Castings' is the key work on castings technology and process metallurgy, and an essential resource on contemporary developments and thinking on the new metallurgy of cast alloys Revised and updated throughout, with new material on subjects including surface turbulence, the new theory of entrainment defects including folded film defects, plus the latest concepts of alloy theory

Analysis of Free Radicals in Biological Systems

Book Description

"Oxidative stress" is used as the generic term describing the involve ment of reactive oxygen species in various human diseases. The scope of such a topic is becoming increasingly wide. The recent interest in radicals such as nitric oxide and the discovery of new mechanisms such as the effect of free radicals on redox sensitive proteins and genes are enlarging our understanding of the physiological role of free radicals. Oxidative stress is involved in numerous pathological. processes such as ageing, respiratory or cardiovascular diseases, cancer, neurological pathologies such as dementia or Parkinson's disease. It still remains difficult, however, to demonstrate by chemical measurement the in vivo production of free radicals and even more to realise their speciation. Therefore, the development of new tools and indicators is engrossing many researchers working in this field. Reliable indicators are abso lutely necessary not only to monitor the evolution of oxidative stress in patients but also to evaluate the efficiency of new antioxidant treat ments. The French Free radical club of Grenoble, the CERLIB has been involved for many years in the organisation of international training programs on methodology, in order to provide both theoretical and practical help to researchers from various countries. Such training sessions have been highly successful and participants value the oppor tunity to learn reliable techniques. This positive echo explains why the researchers of CERLIB decided, with the help of Prof. Dr. B. Kalyanaraman, to publish selected techniques on free radical re search.
