His foster mother Sarah Berry, a kind hearted dressmaker, supported the family, given that her husband Sam was often drunk on the little money he made unloading ships in the docks. Sarah eventually falls sick and dies, but not before asking Douglas to forgive his parents for abandoning him. And she also gives him a letter from his real father, a letter that is to be opened on his twenty second birthday...
