Book Description

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: November 4, 1909 The first passage of Scripture quoted under the belief-alone theory in this article, is quite plainly but the introduction of the principle of faith as a necessary factor in the plan of salvation, for in the twenty-second verse of the same chapter, we read: After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judea, and there he tarried with them, and baptized. Again in the same chapter, verses three and five, it is recorded: Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God. Add to these important sayings, Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven. Book Description

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: February 11, 1909 The Baptist had baptized a great many men before the Savior came to him, but on none of them had the promise of the Father been fulfilled. But when Jesus was baptized and had come out of the water, 10 the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: and lo a voice from heaven, saying, this is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. That hour John knew the Redeemer and he bore record that He was the Son of God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71

Book Description

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: September 23, 1909 In a former communication to the Star attention was called to the manifestation of God's power in preserving Joseph Smith from some deadly pitfalls that lay in his course as the inspired founder of this Church. The remarks in this paper direct our thoughts to the aspect of the case when we look at Joseph Smith as an alleged impostor. Those things that would be deadly pitfalls and fatal to this work if it were not true, are just so many situations created purposely by the Almighty, or seized upon by Him as occasion arose, to show forth His might in the preservation of this Church as its guardian, and its extrication from those apparent pitfalls in so many instances are just the same number of pledges of its divinity which He has given to the world. He who preserved this work from falling into the pitfalls of death on one hand, and who has brought it safely through many others more deadly still if possible, is Divine. The good ship, Zion, has been safely steered through many a rocky sea that we all may know who it is that stands with sleepless eye at the helm. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71

Book Description

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: May 6, 1909 The life of the Book of Mormon is thus seen to hang suspended, as it were, upon the use of a compromising word, a single reference with a distinct modern coloring only, or we might say, the careless slip of a pen. But blunders of this character (so easily made in a spurious work simulating the character of the Book of Mormon) are not found in it. Multitudes of instances of the kind just noticed, and every one of them affording an' Opportunity for dis grace and ruin, swarm about the pathway of any man, unlearned or learned, who dares attempt the task of writing by his own power the history of an ancient people without having a scrap of their authentic history for a guide. Let us now imagine Joseph Smith, a young man, unlearned, un schooled, wholly untrained for writing a book of any kind, not to mention the unusual difficulties and dangers connected with a work like the Book of Mormon, attempting to compose the latter as a religious romance, or a purposed fraud. His knowledge of all ancient matters amounts practically to nothing. (how defiant it was for him to choose the field of which he knew the least for his operations 1) There are limits, or boundaries between the ancient and the modern which he cannot pass, and still retain for a moment the confidence of his fellow-men as an inspired translator of ancient records. We see him reach the line between safety on the one side and discredit and disgrace on the other. This line of separation is sometimes almost invisible, and as he reaches it the impetus of his progress seems sufficient to bear him onward to ruin as a word or two will do the work; but he pauses at the proper point, always pauses there, and some people try to explain his course, or account for his preservation, on one contradictory theory or another, ever failing to perceive that if Joseph Smith were such a man as his opponents claim, he would doubtless have plunged headlong into the first one of these pitfalls that lay hidden from him but so directly in his way. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71

Book Description

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: April 8, 1909 It is the same with the Prophet Joseph Smith and the Latter-day Saints. It is the gospel of the Son of God, revealed anew in this last dispensation, that has made the name of that man immortal, and the saints the people that they are. Without it, in all proba bility the name of Joseph Smith would not have been known out side the locality in which he resided. Scarcely a day passes with out adding lustre to the name of the latter-day prophet, and as the years go by it will become more and more illustrious. It was the same with President Brigham Young. It was Mormonism, or the gospel of Jesus Christ, which made him the great and mighty man that he was. The-same may be said of all the succeeding presidents of the Church and also of the Latter-day Saints as a whole. In their lives the power of the gospel has been plainly made manifest. What a change the gospel of Christ has Wrought in the lives of tens of thousands of men and women in these latter days; through obedience to its holy principles they have been literally regenerated, born again, made new creatures in Christ Jesus, so that they are able to say with Paul, we are not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation. How could we feel ashamed of that which has done so much for us? Well might the Savior say, He that is ashamed of me before men of him will I be ashamed before my Father and before the angels. What have we to be ashamed of, brethren and sisters? Nothing under the sun. On the contrary, we have much to -be proud of. IS the great revelation which the Father and the Son have given of themselves in this dispensation something, to be ashamed of? Verily, no. Think of the state of ignorance from which that glorious manifestation has delivered hundreds of thousands of the human family. What erroneous and absurd ideas we entertained concerning our Father in heaven before the glad tidings of that new revelation reached us. Before, we worshiped we knew not what; now we worship God intelligently, in Spirit and in truth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71

Book Description

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: October 28, 1909 There are things, in connection with this subject, that would not perhaps, be proper to speak of here, before a large and mixed con gregation: but I want to sound a warning to the Latter-day Saints. The time has come for them to look after their children. Every device possible to the understanding and ingenuity of cun ning men, is being used for the purpose of diverting our children from the faith of the gospel and from the love of the truth. Every species of organization is being formed, both in our midst and abroad, having for its object the express purpose of leading astray the children of the Latter-day Saints, because they can't reach their parents. This is their argument: We cannot convert the adult Mormon people, but we may, perhaps, convert their children; we may lead away their children; we do not hope to lead away the Old people. They can't do it, except it may be, now and then, a man or woman who never did know anything parti cularly about the gospel. These, only, are they who can be led away from the truth; and our children can be led away from their parents and from the faith of the gospel, only when they are in a condition that they know not the truth for themselves, not having been taught it, not having had a proper example before them to impress it upon their minds. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71

Book Description

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: September 2, 1909 It is not claimed, of course, that the Book of Mormon history and the developments of scientific research in the field of American antiquities are yet in agreement in every detail. Harmony _of this character is not to be expected either now or later, nor is it necessary that a universal harmony should be established before the inspiration of the Book of Mormon ought to be admitted. The existing agreement respecting quite a number of facts that no mortal knew in 1828 shows that Joseph Smith's knowledge of them was not derived from earthly sources, and hence must have been obtained just as he claims; and it follows that when there is a lack of complete harmony between the Book of Mormon account of certain matters and the statements of uninspired men, the latter are in error or fail to have full information in their possession.
