Art The Lauren Rogers Museum of Art opened in 1923 as the first art museum in Mississippi. Its rich treasury of works by acclaimed masters focuses on European art, American art, Japanese prints, Native American baskets, and English Georgian silver. This handbook showcases each of these magnificent collections. Comprising eighteenth- and nineteenth-century paintings from the French salon, the Barbizon School, and French realism, the European collection in-cludes canvases by Eugéne Boudin, Jean Fran?ois Millet, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Rosa Bonheur, and others. The American collection of paintings, sculpture, and works on paper is the keystone of the museum's permanent holdings. It includes paintings from the Hudson River School, American impressionism, The Ten, the Ashcan School, American regionalism, and early modernism, as well as other major art movements of the twentieth century. Included are works by Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Thomas Moran, Mary Cassatt, Robert Henri, Charles Burchfield, Richmond Barthé, Fairfield Porter, Romare Bearden, and others. Works by master artists Hiroshige, Hokusai, and Utamaro are among 160 woodblock prints in the Japanese ukiyo-e collection. Themes of these prints include landscapes, beautiful women, and theater. Upon the founding of the museum, 500 Native American baskets were the gift of Catherine Marshall Gardiner. Some eighty tribes are represented with remarkable woven objects from the entire continent of North America. The English Georgian silver collection, the gift of Thomas and Harriet Gibbons, exemplifies the highest achieve-ments of master silversmiths of the era. It comprises 105 pieces of sterling, most pieces used for the serving of tea. They include elegant tea caddies, urns, epergnes, and baskets for cakes and sweetmeats. With full-color photographs and detailed descriptions, this handbook is an exciting overview of a remarkable treasury of visual art. This collection of black-and-white images conveys the story of human impact on Mississippi's forests from the pioneer era to the present. Photographs gleaned from public and private archives tell a visual tale of the development of Mississippi's forest industries. Historic locomotives course through the woods, oxen drag big timber over rutted terrain, and lookouts perch atop Forest Service towers eyeing the horizon for telltale signs of fire. Photos of life in a portable logging camp reveal early hospitals, lumber company stores, mobile homes, and the advancing technology of logging machinery. The hatchet and torch give way to the cross-cut saw, the steam-driven loaders, the gas chain saws, and eventually the bulldozer and the Buschcombine. Portraits of the major players in the industry's investment and development provide a human face to the powerful history of Mississippi forestry. The soft pulp lumber used to crate ammunition and to build many hastily constructed army barracks across the country during World War II finds documentation here. Mississippi pine housed the American war effort. After harvesting came inevitable difficulties in land management caused by over-cut terrain. This book documents how the forestry industry returned to renew its resources, replant its fields, and maintain an ecological balance for future generations. Timber includes images by such noteworthy photographers as Clifford H. Poland of Memphis and John N. Teneussin of New Orleans. The Poland photographs alone, many previously misidentified and now on display as Poland's work for the first time, offer a level of artistic achievement that parallels the industrial might of their subjects. The Artist's Sketch

Artist Kate Freeman Clark (1875–1957) left behind over one thousand paintings now stored at a gallery bearing her name in her hometown of Holly Springs, Mississippi. But it was not until after her death in 1957 at the age of eighty-one that citizens even discovered that she was a painter of considerable stature. In her will, Clark left the city her family home, her paintings stored at a warehouse in New York for over forty years, and money to build a gallery, much to the surprise of the Holly Springs community. As a young woman, Clark studied art in New York and took classes with some of the greatest American artists of the day. From the start Clark approached the study of art with discipline and tenacity. She learned from William Merritt Chase when he opened his own school in 1895. For six consecutive summers at his Shinnecock Summer School of Art in Long Island, she mastered the plein air technique. Chase trained many female students, yet he recognized Clark as “his most talented pupil.” The book prints, for the first time, excerpts from Clark's delightful journal of the artist's experience at Chase's school, giving readers firsthand reporting of an artist-led school in the early twentieth century. Clark returned to Holly Springs in 1923. Mysteriously, sadly, she never resumed painting and lived the last years of her life in quietude. The Artist's Sketch shines a light on Clark, finally bringing her out of obscurity. This book also introduces Clark's art to a new generation of readers and highlights current projects and important work being done in Holly Springs by the Kate Freeman Clark Art Gallery and the Marshall County Historical Museum, the two institutions that, since her death, have worked hard to keep Kate Freeman Clark's legacy alive.
