The Life of Cardinal Cheverus

Book Description

Excerpt from The Life of Cardinal Cheverus: Archbishop of Bordeaux, and Formerly Bishop of Boston, in Massachusetts The mother of the Cardinal, Anne Lemarchand des Noyers, was one of those rare women who perfectly understand the discipline. proper for childhood. While she deemed it unnecessary to follow any formal system, the best, in her judgment, was the most simple and Christian. Making it her care to inculcate upon her children, by example, even more than by precept, the fear of God, the habit of prayer, love of their neighbour, charity to the poor, compassion for the afflicted, and a love for whatever is good, honest, and virtuous, she succeeded in securing alike their obedience and affection. She never had recourse to those severe reprimands, which sour the disposition instead of improving it, and still less to corporal punishment, which may enforce an outward obedience, indeed, but produces no change in the heart. One method practised by her was well worthy of a Christian mother. She early taught her children to regard as the greatest of punishments an exclusion from family prayers; which, according to patriarchal custom, it was the practice to offer up every evening. If a child had committed a fault, it was sent away to pray by itself, as being unworthy to unite with the family; and the fear of this punishment kept them all in the path of duty.
