Fiji Recipes and Memories

Book Description

Come with me through food into another world. One which few people have experienced and even fewer, .. remember. We arrived in Fiji in 1941. I was the daughter of a minister. Which wasn't the best paid job in the world, as most people know. We didn't just make do and mend with clothes (as there were just no shops!) .. but with food too. .. (also as there were just no shops!!!). All the ingredients my mother had known and loved from her home , Australia , were now tinned or beyond both our reach & budget. Rising to that challenge, my Mother, then I, learnt local food traditions ... adapting our cooking to suit. Retired from the hospitality industry ... Today I 'island cook' for my 'nearest & dearest'' & small functions for Fiji friends ... this is what I want to share with you. So you too can feel the sand between your toes, the warm breeze on your face and be transported by the tastes & aromas, to my world. I so want to share these with you. Fiji Recipes and Memories - Standard Edition

Book Description

For years my friends have been asking my for recipes. The main reason I have very seldom given any away in the past is because I could rarely remember what I put in them in the way of quantities. Remembering the ingredients hasn’t been too hard, but I have really had to work on the quantity side of things. So do what I do … taste … taste … taste! So here I am putting pen to paper to write down all those things people have been asking me for, and about over the years … This is therefore not a recipe book as such … or maybe one illustrated by stories instead of pictures … well I don’t know … I’ll leave it to you to figure out. I just hope it provides as much amusement as it did for me, putting it all together ...Vinaka, Lyn www.lynettemercer.comLynette Mercer was born in Melbourne, Australia. The eldest of the three daughters of missionary teachers, the Rev.Dr.Alan & Edna Tippett, she came to Fiji with her parents as a two year old child. She has resided and worked on most of the major (and a few small!) islands of the Fiji Group, speaks two dialects fluently … with a smattering of a few others including Hindi! She and her ex-husband Robin, built Kontiki Lodge (now Korosun) on Vanua Levu. From there they completed the building and operated the original Namale Plantation Resort for fifteen years. It was here that their only child, Richard was raised.

The World Cookbook [4 volumes]

Book Description

This is the only world cookbook in print that explores the foods of every nation-state across the globe, providing information on special ingredients, cooking methods, and commonalities that link certain dishes across different geographical areas. Increasing globalization, modern communication, and economic development have impacted every aspect of daily life, including the manner by which food is produced and distributed. While these trends have increased the likelihood and expansion of food influences, variations of the same popular dishes have been found in regions all over the world long before now. This book is an ecological, historical, and cultural examination of why certain foods are eaten, and how these foods are prepared by different social groups within the same—and different—geographical region. The authors cover more than 200 countries and cultural groups, featuring each nation's food culture and traditions, and providing overviews on foodstuffs, typical dishes, and styles of eating. This revised edition features in excess of 400 new recipes, several new countries, and additional sidebars with fun facts explaining unique foods and unfamiliar ingredients. More than 1,600 recipes for popular appetizers, main courses, desserts, snack foods, and celebration dishes are provided, allowing readers to construct full menus from every country of the world.
