Eleanor Jacobs went abroad for the first time when she sailed to Panama to marry a fellow New Yorker and moved to Guatemala. Eleanor describes in amusing detail her crash course in household management and socializing with friends of dictators. The war years were spent in Trinidad, New York and Washington and saw the birth of her only daughter. She spent two years in Bombay, India, at a time of political unrest before settling down in Panama City, Panama, to juggle the demands of wife and mother and eventually that of career woman. Widowed at 54, her daughter married, Eleanor was recruited to the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) executive team in Madison, Wisconsin. She returned to the US after living abroad for 27 years, but a medical condition forced an early retirement. Her health continued to be a major challenge, both physically and spiritually, and she discusses the challenges of these years thoughtfully and philosophically. She has lived in a continuing care community in Madison since 1990, retaining her involvement with CUNA while developing new interests. The essays she wrote in her creative writing classes form the basis of this memoir.

With a lyrical beauty that reverberates off every page, Sweet Hearts tells the tale of a brother and sister that is as haunting as it is majestic Sixteen-year-old Flint Zimmer escapes juvenile detention, hitchhikes 612 miles across Montana, and arrives home, trailing “bad weather and bad luck,” to be reunited with his half sister, ten-year-old Cecile, the only person he trusts and loves. Together they terrorize a local doctor and steal their mother’s car, then strike out alone on a desperate journey south to the Crow Indian Reservation, where their ancestors once lived—and where Flint’s rage and fear will erupt into irrevocable violence.

A post–Civil War adventure of love, money, and determination from the bestselling author of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Captain Westcott receives the news that a wagon train has been raided. Two officers have been wounded and four civilians killed—among the dead is the woman who was traveling to the western frontier to become his wife. Authorities believe that the prize was six thousand dollars, and that the local Arapaho Indians are responsible—a curious assumption given that the greenbacks in this area are the preserve of soldiers, not the tribes. But it soon becomes apparent that there’s more to this raid than money. Having no time to lose, Westcott promptly sets out to hunt the band of raiders, on a mission that will contain more surprises than he could ever have expected. Alive with suspense, The Girl from Fort Wicked is a riveting portrayal of America’s rugged frontier landscape, its language, and its unusual characters from celebrated author Dee Brown, whose groundbreaking classic Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee changed the way many Americans perceived frontier history. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Dee Brown including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.
