Excerpt from The Crisis The Democratic Press alone, has published one or two articles, which might be construed in favor of another candidate. But the republication of those articles appears to have been scrupulously avoided by other printers, while the feeble pretensions of their candidate have been most industriously repeated. Thus the democratic citizens of the state are to be hood winked, and in a short time be called upon to vote for a candidate, of whose political character a great portion of them will be entirely ignorant, until disclosed to them by their political opponents, at a time when it will be too late to retrace their steps. Excerpt from The Political Crisis of 1861: A Reply to Mr. Blaine Mr. Blaine does no more than justice to the purity, he does less than justice to the strength, of Mr. Buchanan's character. Stripped of all rhetorical forms of expression, and plainly stated, his estimate of Mr. Buchanan is, that he was a conscientious but timid man, who was habitually influenced by the stronger minds of those with whom he came in con tact. It is true that this estimate differs from that which was for a long time the popular impres sion of Mr. Buchanan's character, only in that it gives him credit for integrity of purpose; yet a careful study of the actual condition of public affairs in 1860 and 1861, and a dispassionate view of the difficulties which beset Mr. Buchanan's administration in its clos ing days, ought to convince any one that Mr. Bu chanan is entitled to a higher measure of considera tion than that which Mr. Blaine has accorded to him. We are living in a time of crisis which has cascaded through society. Financial crisis has led to an economic crisis of recession and unemployment; an ensuing fiscal crisis over government deficits and austerity has led to a political crisis which threatens to become a democratic crisis. Borne unevenly, the effects of the crisis are exacerbating class and gender inequalities. Rival interpretations – a focus on ‘austerity’ and reduction in welfare spending versus a focus on ‘financial crisis’ and democratic regulation of finance – are used to justify radically diverse policies for the distribution of resources and strategies for economic growth, and contested gender relations lie at the heart of these debates. The future consequences of the crisis depend upon whether there is a deepening of democratic institutions, including in the European Union. Sylvia Walby offers an alternative framework within which to theorize crisis, drawing on complexity science and situating this within the wider field of study of risk, disaster and catastrophe. In doing so, she offers a critique and revision of the social science needed to understand the crisis.

Excerpt from The Crisis in Russia The prolonged state of crisis in which the country has been kept by external war, while strengthening the ruling party by rallying even their enemies to their support, has had the other effects that a national crisis always has on the internal politics of a country. Methods of government which in normal times would no doubt be softened or disguised by ceremonial usage are used nakedly and justified by necessity. Excerpt from The Political Crisis the Danger and the Remedy: Speech of Hon. William H. English, of Indiana, in the House of Representatives, May 2, 1860 Such are the practical and legitimate results of Republican theories, and I hold them up to the indignant gaze of my fellow-countrymen. Excerpt from The Five Cotton States and New York, or Remarks Upon the Social and Economical Aspects of the Southern Political Crisis If such topics as these cannot, in this country, be dis cussed without limitation, and if decisions cannot be reached which should command the assent of all, the hope of maintaining free governments might as well be given up at once, for questions as important and semons must be met in every country; in point of fact, they have been met and discussed for eighty years, with the excitement of discussion not unfrequently at the highest pitch to which the interest felt in such subjects could carry it. We have hitherto passed through these scenes safely, and fully vin dicated our capacity for self-government. So far as the questions involved are concerned, we can do so again. Although Slavery is one of these delicate topics, and in volves questions the most difficult of solution, we do not hesitate to say that there is patriotism, forbearance, intel ligence, and discrimination enough to meet and settle, wisely and well, every question to which that subject can give rise.
