The Practice and Applied Therapeutics of Osteopathy

Book Description

Excerpt from The Practice and Applied Therapeutics of Osteopathy: Revised Since the publication of the second edition of this work, the growth and progress of Osteopathy have been marked, and it has been the aim of the author to have these pages reflect those virile characteristics of the Science. He has made an earnest endeavor to add to his previous work as much as possible that would be of value to the profession. The work has been rewritten in many parts, and much new matter has been added throughout, considerably enlarging the volume. The same considerations that before led to the omission from these pages of the facts of pathology, symptomatology, etc., which the student finds useful in his studies, but which are so available from other sources, were still deemed sufficient. But the continued demand for a compact work upon this subject, of moderate price, and devoted exclusively to osteopathic considera tions seems to warrant the bringing out of this further edition. The Practice of Osteopathy

Book Description

Excerpt from The Practice of Osteopathy: Designed for the Use of Practitioners and Students of Osteopathy This work on the practice of osteopathy has been written purely for the practitioner and student of osteopathy. Up to the present time there has been little attempt made along osteopathic lines in a literary way. The student has had nothing whatever to guide him in his studies but the notes he has taken from osteopathic lectures; and the practitioner no work to guide him or to refer to in his practice; yet it is with many misgivings, on account of the science of osteopathy being in crude published form, that I publish this work and give it to the osteopathic world. Still I feel a feeble attempt will be a stimulus to all apostles of the science, and especially so as the art of osteopathic practice is being well advanced. It will never be possible to write osteopathy completely and in detail as each case is an individual study. The best we can expect is to give the philosophy of the science and to state the principles in general terms. The science is practically unlimited; its breadth and depth are unmeasurable. Osteopathic practice consists first of understanding the normal so that the abnormal conditions may be recognized when met; and second, when these abnormalities are found, of giving specific treatment and readjusting the parts. Practically, to the osteopath it makes but little difference what the disease is; it is his business to locate the derangement and correct it. Osteopathy

Book Description

Learn about the science that revolutionized 20th century medicine from the founder himself! Andrew Taylor Still liberated his practice from traditional, then futile, medicine. Having prescribed drugs for years and found them of more harm than benefit, he resorted to engineering principles and treated the human body as one magnificent machine, founding the science of osteopathy and the first school of osteopathic medicine in the world. "Osteopathy is the natural way by which all the diseases can be relieved." Writes Still, explaining that restoring natural blood flow through manipulation of muscle tissue and bone is the only remedy the body needs. His theories are supported by evidence from his personal experience. "I will give no undemonstrable theory." Whether you're a medical student, practitioner, or nurse who wants to have unconventional tricks up their sleeve to relieve their patients, a history student studying the development of medical practice, or a curious reader who's passionate to know about 20th century pioneering methods in medicine, this book is all you need to understand the basics of osteopathy, and you don't need to be familiar with medical terminology. "I have written as far as possible in the plainest language."
