The Real Palestine of Today (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Real Palestine of Today In writing this little book, I have tried to do just one thing - to draw in rapid outline a picture of Palestine, as it appears to those who look long enough to appreciate something of the true values of a land which differs in so many respects from our own that a mere hurried glance is apt to see only those things which are strange and incongruous. I have, therefore, kept out-of-doors as much as possible; for the most solemn and lasting memory of the Holy Land is not the incoherent jumble of doubtful shrines, but the beauty of the everlasting hills. And because, in painting a landscape, each detail must have some definite position and coloring, it has seemed better not to go into the discussion of conflicting opinions, but, in every instance, without qualification or defense, to fit some one conclusion into its proper place in the picture. Ordinarily this has been the most commonly accepted belief. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. PALESTINE

Book Description

Today in Syria and Palestine (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Today in Syria and Palestine A conscientious effort is made in this volume to describe the Holy Land, and the historical scenes of Syria as they appear to-day to the eyes of a newspaper reporter. It is not intended for theologians, but for ordinary people; and was prepared for publication to gratify many readers of The Chicago Record-Herald, who asked that the letters which appeared in its columns in the spring of 1901 might be preserved in permanent form. In company with Mr. and Mrs. William H. Baldwin of Washington, D. C., and my own family, I spent several weeks visiting the scenes identified with the life of our Savior, and the homes and haunts of the Patriarchs and Prophets of Scripture times. Such an experience brings them closer to you; gives them a vitality they do not have in books; and that, of course, is the greatest benefit of travel; and let me here record my humble testimony to the truth of the Scriptures. A journey through Palestine destroys many illusions, and disturbs one's confidence in mankind, and especially in many of the professional teachers of Christianity, but it confirms the faith of conscientious and thoughtful readers in the Bible and its teachings; for every spot fully described in its pages can be immediately and distinctly identified. This is an extraordinary fact. I know of no other book of which the same can be said. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Palestine, Past and Present

Book Description

Excerpt from Palestine, Past and Present: With Biblical, Literary, and Scientific Notices But all these terrors and beauties are considered the natural consequences of sea-life, and seem to lead the souls Of many to find the cause of the one in nothing stronger than a hard wind, and of the other in nothing higher than a blue sky. It is strange that so little true religion, with so faint an acknowledgment of God, exists among sea-faring men, around whom such mighty motives are incessantly gathering. The distance from Cape Clear - the most southern point of Ireland - to Liverpool is three hundred miles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. PALESTINE

To-Day in Palestine (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from To-Day in Palestine NO country has been so much studied by our ablest men and had so much written about it as Palestine. It is, however, an inexhaustible subject. As the land where Jesus lived, taught and died, it will never cease to be in the daily thought of the Christian. And therefore I think there is room for many more vol umes that give to us a fuller knowledge of the land and people. I have written primarily for the traveler. 'a visit to Palestine is no longer a difficult trip made by a few who delight and awe their friends and countrymen on their return. It is no more difficult than a tour in England, except that it is farther away and the coun try is not yet in all respects prepared to furnish the comfort and speed of more advanced lands. Many have made this tour and described it. But I do not think any person, however gifted, can gain a correct knowledge of the land in a single trip. The first trip only opens the way and gives a foundation upon which to build. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
