Seeing America is the first-ever catalog of the University of Rochester Memorial Art Gallery's American collection. Founded in 1913, the Memorial Art Gallery was created in conjunction with the University of Rochester so that it would function within a scholarly milieu, yet at the same time perform service as a community museum. From its conception it has been an ardent advocate for American art, which so many counterpart institutions snubbed untilat least the 1930s, and more often until well after World War II, in favor of European and Asian art. "This publication accompanies the first survey of Willie Cole's work from the late 1980s to the present. Cole was born and raised in New Jersey and has resided in the state his entire life. The exhibition and catalogue focus on Cole's mixed media sculptural works made from salvaged irons, blow dryers, ironing boards, high-heeled shoes, lawn jockeys, and bicycle parts; paintings and drawings made of iron scorch marks, and prints. Cole's consumer and domestic objects assume the appearance of objects from another time, culture, or place, transformed into powerful cultural and spiritual evocations referencing African and global culture. Monet's Waterloo Bridge

Impressionist master Claude Monet began over forty versions of Waterloo Bridge during his three London sojourns between 1899 and 1901. He viewed his paintings of the landmark bridge both individually and as an ensemble, collectively expressing his sense of the essential subject - the atmosphere and colors of the fog-bound landscape of London's Thames River. Monet struggled to complete these paintings after his return to France, where he re-worked many of the canvases in his Giverny studio, releasing them for sale over the course of several years.
