In 1984, a conference called Wildlife 2000: Modeling habitat relationships of terrestrial vertebrates, was held at Stanford Sierra Camp at Fallen Leaf Lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The conference was well-received, and the published volume (Verner, J. , M. L. Morrison, and C. J. Ralph, editors. 1986. Wildlife 2000: modeling habitat relationships of terrestrial vertebrates, University of Wisconsin Press, Madison, Wisconsin, USA) proved to be a landmark publication that received a book award by The Wildlife Society. Wildlife 2001: populations was a followup conference with emphasis on the other major biological field of wildlife conservation and management, populations. It was held on July 29-31, 1991, at the Oakland Airport Hilton Hotel in Oakland, California, in accordance with our intent that this conference have a much stronger international representation than did Wildlife 2000. The goal of the conference was to bring together an international group of specialists to address the state of the art in wildlife population dynamics, and set the agenda for future research and management on the threshold of the 21st century. The mix of specialists included workers in theoretical, as well as practical, aspects of wildlife conservation and management. Three general sessions covered methods, modelling, and conservation of threatened species.

Almost 20 years after the first MEDPINE book "Ecology, biogeography and management of Pinus halepensis and P. brutia forest ecosystems in the Mediterranean basin "(Ne'eman and Trabaud, 2000) was published, this new book presents up-to-date and state of the art information, covering a wide range of topics concerning Mediterranean pine trees growing in native and planted forests, their ecosystems and management. This will be an essential source of scientific information for learning, exploring planning and managing mediterranean pine and mixed forests. Environmental Gradient Analysis, Ordination, and Classification in Environmental Impact Assessments

This report develops the theoretical foundation for analytical description and quantification of habitat structure. The analytical description of environmental gradients is shown to be an eigenanalysis problem, mathematically equivalent to the largest eigenvector (or first principal component) of a principal components analysis. The analytical representation of an environmental gradient, itself a single variable, is empirically demonstrated to have similar ecological information as the combination of all the original 58 habitat variables describing five Mojave Desert study sites. Two vastly different data bases were analyzed to explore the effects of sample sizes and variable selection on the ordination of study sites in both principal components and canonical variate space. Merits and shortcomings of principal components analysis, canonical analysis of discriminance, and cluster analysis for the ordination and classification of samples are reviewed in detail. Canonical analysis of discriminance is a very effective mechanism for classifying samples into a priori established groups, or for identifying variables that contribute significantly to group discrimination.
