The Rustlers of Alpha Colony

Book Description

Are there rustlers on Alpha Colony? Impossible! This peaceful colony world was founded by people who respected each other and were devoted to the idea of inalienable rights--life, liberty, and property. Cattle and crops were especially respected, because they were the basis of the colony's approaching independence from Earth. But when teenaged David, Coby, and Joshua discover evidence of an interplanetary plot to steal their cattle and ruin their home world, they know they have to do something! Murder, suspense, and blatant crime are involved. Is there a traitor in the Space Patrol? Interplanetary space travel is just one of the challenges. They must immediately do something to preserve the world they love and which is the foundation of life and happiness for their families. Will anyone listen to teenaged kids? What do they know? They only have their faith, their computer prowess, and their love for their families. Will that be enough to rescue their families' ranches from ruin, and their home world from servitude? This adventure, the first in the Alpha Chronicles series, will enthrall readers of all ages, and is a particularly exciting, suspenseful saga suitable for younger readers aged 10-14. Older readers will enjoy a story that will remind them of the adventure stories of their youth, such as those by G.A. Gently and Zane Grey, while taking them on a journey to the future instead of the past. The characters are particularly compelling. As events unfold, these three boys become warriors, working with their families to track theft of their cattle that threatens to destroy their way of life. Who can they trust, other than themselves and a few close family members? Can they solve the mystery of what is happening to the colony's cattle in unbelievable numbers? This mystery would pose a challenge to trained adult detectives. Will these boys be able to solve a mystery that much wiser and more mature men would have trouble solving?

The Rustlers of Alpha Colony

Book Description

There's a crisis on Alpha Colony, the first of Earth's colonies outside the solar system. The planet Alpha, located in the Centauri System, is a perfect agricultural world. That's why Earth wants to keep it and exploit its resources for its own benefit. The contract that established the colony is due to expire, and one of the conditions for granting Alpha Colony its independence is not as simple as it seems. The planet's farms and ranches must meet a strict quota of grain and livestock to be shipped to Earth over the term of the contract. If that quota isn't met, Alpha Colony will remain under Earth's heavy-handed rule for many more years-or perhaps forever. There's just one problem. Large amounts of cattle have gone missing. Could there be rustlers on Alpha Colony? It seems unthinkable, but a trio of middle school students has stumbled across evidence that has them convinced someone is stealing cattle. Without the missing cattle, the colony can't make its quota. But will anyone believe these three boys? Will they be able to find evidence to convince the planetary leaders before it's too late? This first book in the Chronicles of Alpha introduces David Lloyd, his family, and his best friends, Coby Steinberg and Joshua Bateman. Are these three intrepid young detectives involved in a challenge far beyond their abilities? Or will they be able to meet the challenge and save their home world?

Grieving Beyond Gender

Book Description

Grieving Beyond Gender: Understanding the Ways Men and Women Mourn is a revision of Men Don’t Cry, Women Do: Transcending Gender Stereotypes of Grief. In this work, Doka and Martin elaborate on their conceptual model of "styles or patterns of grieving" – a model that has generated both research and acceptance since the publication of the first edition in 1999. In that book, as well as in this revision, Doka and Martin explore the different ways that individuals grieve, noting that gender is only one factor that affects an individual’s style or pattern of grief. The book differentiates intuitive grievers, where the pattern is more affective, from instrumental grievers, who grieve in a more cognitive and behavioral way, while noting other patterns that might be more blended or dissonant. The model is firmly grounded in social science theory and research. A particular strength of the work is the emphasis placed on the clinical implications of the model on the ways that different types of grievers might best be supported through individual counseling or group support.
