The Scary Train Ride

Book Description

Welcome to my first "ALL ABOARD" children's 3-book series involving trains and true events in the early 1900's. Luke and Summer live a couple blocks from the train depot in the small mining town of Wallace, Idaho. Because their daddy is a train conductor for the Northern Pacific Railroad, Luke and Summer recognize every train that rolls through their little mountain community. Some trains carry silver and gold from the local mines and others carry people to and from Wallace. In Book 1, The Scary Train Ride, Luke is pressed into service to help with a daring rescue of his family and the people of Wallace. The grand adventure involves a forest fire, a burning bridge and the race to safety on a train. This story is based on an actual true event involving the 1910 forest fire and a Northern Pacific train. Because the Bible and Jesus was the heart of many families in early American history, the Christian value of "faith" has been incorporated into the story. And please don't forget to check out the educational "Fun facts" at the end of the book. Happy "rail" reading!

Winner of the Governor General's Award, the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator's Award, the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Award and the Ruth Schwartz Award This powerful, unforgettable and multi-award-winning tale is based on the lives of the Chinese who settled on the west coast of North America in the early 1900s. Left behind in China by her father, who has gone to North America to find work, Choon-yi has made her living by selling her paintings in the market. When her father writes one day and asks her to join him, she joyously sets off, only to discover that he has been killed. Choon-yi sees the railway and the giant train engines that her father died for, and she is filled with an urge to paint them. But her work disappoints her until a ghostly presence beckons her to board the train where she meets the ghosts of the men who died building the railway. She is able to give them peace by returning their bones to China where they were born.

Haunted Akron

Book Description

The ruins of an industrial past provide the perfect haunting grounds in this spirited Ohio city. Run down the apparitions that float down Rubber City streets and façades like the shadow of a passing blimp. Stroll along forgotten canals amid the restless chatter and clank of spirits cut down before their hard lives became easier. Catch a show at the Civic Theater with a “former” engineer who prophesied that death wouldn’t keep him from work. A more restive spirit is that of John Tedrow, a twenty-something mauled and murdered during a drunken brawl in 1882; he wails for help and resolution. In this ghostly tour through Akron’s haunted and sometimes brutal past, paranormal specialist and historian Jeri Holland digs into the ghost tales and local legends that linger here like this city’s industrial heritage. “Haunted Akron is a tour of events, places and creepy legends.” —Ohio.com
