The Slave in Canada (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Slave in Canada When engaged in a certain historical inquiry, I found occasion to examine the magnificent collection of the Cana dian Archives at Ottawa, a collection which ought not to be left unexamined by anyone writing on Canada. In that inquiry I discovered the proceedings in the case of Chloe Cooley set out in Chapter V of the text. This induced me to make further researches on the subject of Slavery in Upper Canada. The result was incorporated in a paper, The Slave in Upper Canada, read before the Royal Society of Canada in May 1919, and subsequently published in the journal OF negro history for October, 1919. Some of the Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada and the editor of the journal OF negro history have asked me to ex pand the paper. The present work is the result. The New Slavery (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The New Slavery Why should Canadian ham and bacon be ten or twelve cents dearer here than in England? There is no use of making the excuse that labor is better paid in Canada than in England. The excuse is bad, because the bacon is produced by Canadian labor. The Englishman in England pays this cost of production, and also the cost of transportation by rail and ocean. Therefore we ought to get the bacon and ham for a good deal less than is paid in England, instead of ten or twelve cents a pound more. Canada is a storehouse of food, producing more than it can consume, and helping to feed the rest of the world. Yet the price of food is far higher here than in England, which does not produce nearly enough food for its own needs. The Life of Josiah Henson

Book Description

Excerpt from The Life of Josiah Henson: Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada After this brief period of comparative comfort, however, the death of Dr. Mcp. Brought about a revolution in our condition, which, common as such things are in slave countries, can never be imagined by those not subject to them, nor recol lected by those who have been, without emotions of grief and indignation deep and inefiaceable. The doctor was riding from one of his scenes of riotous excess, when, falling from his horse, in crossing a little run, not a foot deep, he was una ble to save himself from drowning. In consequence of his decease, it became neces sary to sell the estate and the slaves, in order to divide the property among the heirs; and we wereall put up at auction and sold to the highest bidder, and scattered over various parts of the country. My brothers and sisters were bid off one by one, while my mother, holding my hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Slave Son (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Slave Son I did not start in life however with any particular sympathy for the Negroes. There were no scenes of cruelty or oppression in our homestead to awaken my pity, - far otherwise; and while our domestics presented all those features of an enslaved people so repulsive to the free, I learned from the first to re gard them, as the children of all slaveholders do, in the light of a species of cattle, - I do not mean be cause they were bought and sold, and their labour unrewarded, I mean something worse still, - I mean that neither their total dismissal of all the proprie ties and decencies of life, nor their immorality, ever shocked my principles or affected my mind any more than the habits of the beasts of burden working with them and yet the Negroes were always with us and about us, IO also were the domestic animals belonging to the house. I record these facts the more willingly, as it may help to show the nature and extent of the influence which slavery holds over man.
