Excerpt from The Slave Son I did not start in life however with any particular sympathy for the Negroes. There were no scenes of cruelty or oppression in our homestead to awaken my pity, - far otherwise; and while our domestics presented all those features of an enslaved people so repulsive to the free, I learned from the first to re gard them, as the children of all slaveholders do, in the light of a species of cattle, - I do not mean be cause they were bought and sold, and their labour unrewarded, I mean something worse still, - I mean that neither their total dismissal of all the proprie ties and decencies of life, nor their immorality, ever shocked my principles or affected my mind any more than the habits of the beasts of burden working with them and yet the Negroes were always with us and about us, IO also were the domestic animals belonging to the house. I record these facts the more willingly, as it may help to show the nature and extent of the influence which slavery holds over man.
