The Spirituality of Following Jesus in John’s Gospel

Book Description

Research on "following Jesus" has mostly been done in terms of what Jesus' followers ought to do. In this unprecedented study, Kim presents "following Jesus" in John's Gospel through the perspective of what Jesus does for his followers. "Following Jesus" is a journey towards the place where Jesus leads his followers, that is, to a relationship with the Father. It is ultimately participating in the Son's communion with the Father. Jesus, who was in the bosom of the Father, descended from him and ascends to him, taking his followers with him, so that they may be with him where he is with the Father in glory and love. Kim develops this thesis by examining the term akolouthein ("to follow") and correlated motifs in John's Gospel.

Follow Me

Book Description

The Gospel of John heralds a unique call to discipleship. Unlike any other Gospel, the Fourth Gospel offers a multitude of benefits for following Jesus. John promises that discipleship is rewarded with adoption by the Father, royal friendship with the Son, and abiding with the Father and the Son through the Spirit. Nearly two dozen additional benefits fall under these three main categories as John persuades his readers to continuous belief in Jesus. Follow Me: The Benefits of Discipleship in the Gospel of John traces these rewards as incentives for disciples to remain loyal to Jesus in the context of hostility and opposition, in all times and all places, no matter the cost.

Following Jesus

Book Description

"The Church as a whole and all her Pastors, like Christ, must set out to lead people out of the desert, towards the place of life, towards friendship with the Son of God, towards the One who gives us life, and life in abundance."– Pope Benedict XVI, Apostolic Letter, Porta Fidei Becoming a disciple of Christ was no easy task in the time of Jesus and it continues to be the ultimate challenge. It is about combining one's head and heart to not only become His student in an intellectual sense but also "conforming" to His person, imitating His sacrificial love and, by means of faith and baptism, actually taking on His identity as the Son of God. This book from renowned Catholic biblical scholar Daniel J. Harrington is divided into four parts, each of which deals with six key New Testament passages relating to the theme of following Jesus. Part One: Hearing Jesus' Call in the Synoptic Gospels Part Two: Growing in Appreciation of Jesus in John's Gospel Part Three: Paul as a Disciple of Jesus Part Four: Other Ways of Being a Disciple of Jesus Harrington brings the concepts home in an accessible and actionable way through simplified summaries at the end of each section, along with the proactive Think, Pray, and Act reflections and Ten Points on Discipleship for support and guidance. Following Jesus: What the New Testament Teaches Us is perfect for individual or group study as we share in the universal call to discipleship.

The Spirituality of the Gospels

Book Description

Probably no other works of ancient literature have had a greater influence on religious life and thought than the Four Gospels. Certainly no other works have been the subject of such intense study by those determined to learn more about the Gospels' central, often enigmatic, figure. And yet, despite the bewildering variety of scholarly approaches, few have sought to interpret the Gospels in terms of the distinctive spirituality that each contains and seeks to evoke in its readers. That is the aim of this important new book -- to help today's readers explore what each Gospel has to offer when viewed by its own right as a classic of Western spirituality. Written in a clear, non-technical style, the fresh perspectives this work presents will open new vistas on the familiar stories about the life, teaching, and ultimate significance of Jesus.

Following Jesus

Book Description

“Timeless wisdom for life from one of the great spiritual masters of our age.”—James Martin, S.J., author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage The beloved author of The Return of the Prodigal Son offers an inspirational and compelling case for why Christianity is still relevant, beautiful, intelligent, and necessary in our modern world. At one of the lowest points in Henri Nouwen’s life, he gave a series of lectures on the importance of following Jesus in an age of anxiety. Drawn from those talks, Following Jesus reveals the deep turmoil and sometimes turbulent inner life of a man who has become an icon of compassion and vulnerability for Christians and non-Christians alike. He writes eloquently about calling and purpose, fear and hope, and he explains why, with so many choices available to the twenty-first-century seeker, including atheism and secularism, the greatest reward for those looking for fulfillment is to choose belief in God. Along the way he offers warm, insightful, and practical spiritual habits to help readers navigate the narrow, sometimes arduous, but ultimately gratifying road of conviction and faith. Praise for Following Jesus “Few writers have influenced me more than Henri Nouwen. These newly published lectures offer fresh and timely insights amid the familiar cadences of Nouwen’s prose, written from a place of deep anxiety but even deeper hope.”—John Inazu, professor of political science, Washington University in St. Louis, author of Confident Pluralism “In Following Jesus, beloved pastor and spiritual mentor Henri Nouwen guides the reader on the journey he has traveled as a follower of Jesus. Without minimizing the anxieties, fears, and brokenness that touch down in every reader’s story, Nouwen gently leads the way into a life that centers on Jesus and engulfs the follower with God’s love, a sense of belonging, and a purpose that endures. Truly a wise and welcome word for anyone in this age of anxiety.”—Carolyn Custis James, author of Half the Church: Recapturing God’s Global Vision for Women and Finding God in the Margins
