Dmitri Gurov works in a bank in Moscow. He is under 40 years old, married, and has a daughter and two sons. Unhappy in his marriage and in the monotony and meaninglessness of his life, he is often unfaithful and considers women to belong to "an inferior race."While on vacation in Yalta, he sees a young girl walking along the boardwalk with her little Pomeranian and struggles to get to know her.
