The Twelve Pillars of Unbelief

Book Description

The Twelve Pillars of Unbelief: Why the Arguments for Atheism Don't Work and Why the Ones for Christianity Do. By: Douglas Olsen About the Book This book summarizes the reasons atheism is logically faulty from a Christian perspective. The author incorporates his own examples, insights, and humor. According to the author we are living in an increasingly secular society, and there have been best-selling books by the so-called New Atheists, which need to be put in their place with a fresh approach to the beliefs of Christianity. This book is different from other books attacking atheism in the inclusion of a chapter on heaven and hell with an nontraditional but Biblical view of hell and a section on evolution, Intelligent Design, and creationism. I hope the reader, who is more likely to be Christian rather than atheist, will be armed with arguments against atheism as well as thoughtful ideas about Christianity. Maybe some agnostics or seekers will find truth in it.

Unbelief

Book Description

In this classic work praised by Pope Pius IX himself, Fr. Nicolas J. Laforet lays out the spiritual causes of unbelief, and shows the antidotes necessary to remedy each. Noting that unbelief is not a particularly modern phenomenon (after all, many people refused to believe in Jesus even after having witnessed his miracles), Fr. Laforet explains that unbelief is not merely a matter of the intellect; on the contrary, where unbelief prevails we almost always find its source in a person’s will. From the fruits of his spiritual and psychological analysis, Fr. LaForet then crafts a simple but powerful remedy — one that is sure to bring to Christ any reasonable person who honestly employs it. No wonder the great Cardinal James Gibbons treasured this book, writing: “I consider its value beyond price, and highly recommend it to all, especially in these days of doubt and denial.” Among the things you will learn here are: The spiritual roots of unbelief, and the main form it takes todayIf you can’t make yourself believe, why does the Church consider unbelief a vice? Why Christianity could conquer the brutal Roman Empire, but suffer even more defeats in our dayFaith and reason: learn how Christian faith purifies reason, strengthens it, extends it, and even elevates itTrue faith: why it isn’t blind — and can never beThe one thing that always opens the gates of faith — even to those who live in darknessDiscover the two forms of materialism — practical and dogmatic— and how each corrodes faith “This book will be a powerful aid to souls, helping them reject error and gain free access to truth.” Blessed Pope Pius IX

Battling Unbelief Study Guide

Book Description

When Faith Flickers, Stoke the Fire No one sins out of duty. We sin because it offers some promise of happiness. That promise enslaves us–until we believe that God is more desirable than life itself (Psalm 63:3). Only the power of God’s superior promises in the gospel can emancipate our hearts from servitude to the shallow promises and fleeting pleasures of sin. In this twelve-chapter study guide developed by Desiring God, you will find practical ways to sever the clinging roots of sin that ensnare us, including anxiety, pride, shame, impatience, covetousness, bitterness, despondency, and lust. Delighting in the bounty of God’s glorious gospel promises will free us for a less sin-encumbered life, to the glory of Christ. Rooted in solid biblical reflection, this book aims to help guide you through the battles to the joys of victory by the power of the gospel and its superior pleasure.

The Strongman of Unbelief

Book Description

God, through Isaiah, raises this question: "Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" Isa. 53:1. What is the full report? What is the full gospel? Isaiah 53 tells us all that Jesus appropriated for us on the Cross. It is salvation from sin unto eternal life, but it is much so more than that! There are many unbelieving believers who do not appropriate the full benefits of the Cross. They have selectively appropriated the basics yet bypassed all the other good fruit. The Devil's goal is to keep us in unbelief. The devil is in trouble if we believe the full report. He torments and defeats us by keeping us in unbelief so that we cannot appropriate the full benefits of the Cross. God is going to set us free from the spirits of unbelief, deafness and dumbness. We are going to get rid of that rascal of unbelief in our lives so we can see and hear what God is saying to us in this hour. This book contains revelatory insights concerning: - The full report of all that the cross provides - The devil's master strategy to destroy faith - How unbelief is robbing the Body of Christ of much of what the Cross provides - Subtle things that affect our ability to believe - Deliverance from the spirits of unbelief, blindness, deafness and dumbness

Unbelief

Book Description

I don't know about you, but I have to take some comfort in the story of Peter's going down into the water. Please don't think me unkind! But how worthless would I feel with my level of unbelief if he had no doubt in him whatsoever as he ventured onto the waters? How low would my head sink, thinking of my unbelief, if he kept the faith and did cartwheels on top of the water? He might've even started to Riverdance all over the sea! But he didn't. He was human, just like you and me. I mean, he was a disciple who saw the miracles firsthand. He journeyed with Jesus and witnessed the paralyzed walk, the blind see, and the mute speak. And now, he actually sees Jesus walking on the water! What else does he need to see? Nothing. After all this, Peter has the faith to volunteer to step out of the boat and onto the water with Jesus. Wow! How amazing is that? That is beyond courageous in my book. I wonder if he waited with bated breath for Jesus to agree to his request. I wonder if he stepped out of the boat with fear and trepidation, waiting for something firm below his feet or if he pushed his brother Andrew and Bartholomew out of the way to leap onto the waves. Regardless, it didn't take long before the soggy platform started to diminish. And the passage says all he saw was the wind, and down he went. But there Jesus was, with a helping hand to save him and to ask him why he doubted. It's as if Jesus was asking, "Ain't you seen enough of me to trust me? What else do you want from me before you believe?" And I think He has said that to us many times too.
