Provides a classic example of how nations attempt to overcome a negative heritage through past mastering of their histories Evaluates the continuing dominance of nature and conservation over concerns for cultural heritage Employs ethnographic and archaeological methodologies to reveal how the past is processed into a new national heritage Identifies heritage as therapy, exemplified in the strategy for repairing legacies of racial and ethnic difference in post-apartheid South Africa Highlights the role of archaeological heritage sites, national parks and protected areas in economic development and social empowerment Explores how nature trumps culture and the global implications of the new configurations of heritage

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 2,0, University of Salzburg, language: English, abstract: People are different all over the world. Some are rich, some are poor, some live in peace, some live in war, some have a dark skin, and some have a bright skin. Nadine Gordimer describes in “The Ultimate Safari” the life situation and experiences of some African inhabitants of a little village, called Mozambique, during wartime. The characters of the story are not only confronted by racial segregation and oppression by the white people but also by hunger, death and sorrow. In order to survive, they have to leave their home country and to go on a dangerous trip through Kruger Park to a refugee camp, where they are kept in peace and safety. Gordimer manages to convey the terrible circumstances of these people through her way of telling. In “The Ultimate Safari” many characters, objects, animals, and places become highly charged with symbolic meaning because they are described by a naive child narrator. This paper starts with the general effects that the use of this kind of narrative technique has on the reader and continuous with detailed descriptions of the different functions of symbolism.

What happens when 8-year-old Kate, on safari in South Africa with her family, meets Michelle, a professional wildlife guide? The two new friends – one from America, the other from South Africa – turn their adventures into a lively book in which they share facts and secrets about the African bushveld. At the same time, they show how young children everywhere can become advocates for wild animals. Let’s Go on Safari! combines daily entries in Kate’s African safari journal with insights from Michelle about the bushveld and wildlife. Kate discovers the wonders of wildlife contrasted with the threats that animals face. She is inspired to make a difference. The book provides examples of small-scale, achievable animal advocacy projects that kids can initiate in their own communities and schools.
