The Villains of Splazat

Book Description

This is the story of Matt Murat, a boy who lives in the town named Rata-tat-tat. Matts best friends are his cat whom he calls Tit-For-Tat and Pat, a lovely velvet winged bat that lives in Matts barn on their farm in Rata-tat-tat. The three go on a mission to rescue the poor bats and gnats of Splazat! The village of Splazat is ruled by a sorcerer, a rat, and his frat! On the very night that Nat and his frat are celebrating the Rats Sabbat, Matt, Pat the bat and Tit-For-Tat arrive to settle the score with Nat and his frat of rats. Sheer terror and mayhem await the brave trio after their cover is exposed! Whinchat dispatches her minions of rats to attack the intruders but the tables abruptly turn on them in this unforgettable and surprise ending to the Villains of Splazat! The Villains of Splazat is, arguably, one of the most educationally stimulating and fun childrens adventure tales to come along since the writings of Maurice Sendaks, Where the Wild Things Are and the tongue twisting tomfoolery of the Dr. Seusss books. The Villains of Splazat is suitable for parents to read to preschool aged children, as well as for older children to read for themselves. The Villains of Splazat is written in metrical form with alliteration using words ending in at, if you have not already guessed. Initially, the words are very easy, but grow in complexity throughout the story, which is why it can be enjoyed by a wider age range. When read aloud, the alliteration and increasing complexity of the words, which become challenging tongue twisters at times, make the book humorous and enjoyable entertainment for parent and child. It is also; however, an educational tool for expanding the vocabulary of children, and a large glossary is included to help with definitions and correct pronunciation. Have fun reading!

Insect Olfaction

Book Description

JOHN G. HILDEBRAND Research on insect olfaction is important for at least two reasons. First, the olfactory systems of insects and their arthropod kin are experi mentally favourable models for studies aimed at learning about general principles of olfaction that apply to vertebrates and invertebrates alike. Detailed comparisons between the olfactory pathways in vertebrates and insects have revealed striking similarities of functional organisation, physiol ogy, and development, suggesting that olfactory information is processed through neural mechanisms more similar than different in these evolution arily remote creatures. Second, insect olfaction itself is important because of the economic and medical impact of insects that are agricultural pests and disease vectors, as well as positive impact of beneficial species, such as the bees and moths responsible for pollination and production of honey. The harm or benefit attributable to an insect is a function of what it does - that is, of its behaviour - which is shaped by sensory information. Often olfaction is the key modality for control of basic insect behaviour, such as ori entation and movement toward, and interactions with, potential mates, appro priate sites for oviposition, and sources of food. Not surprisingly, therefore, much work on insect olfaction has been motivated by long-term hopes of using knowledge of this pivotal sensory system to design strategies for mon itoring and managing harmful species and fostering the welfare of beneficial ones.

Evolution of Visual and Non-visual Pigments

Book Description

Photopigments are molecules that react to light and mediate a number of processes and behaviours in animals. Visual pigments housed within the photoreceptors of the eye, such as the rods and cones in vertebrates are the best known, however, visual pigments are increasingly being found in other tissues, including other retinal cells, the skin and the brain. Other closely related molecules from the G protein family, such as melanopsin mediate light driven processes including circadian rhythmicity and pupil constriction. This Volume examines the enormous diversity of visual pigments and traces the evolution of these G protein coupled receptors in both invertebrates and vertebrates in the context of the visual and non-visual demands dictated by a species’ ecological niche.

Atlas of Arthropod Sensory Receptors

Book Description

The great variety in structure and function of arthropod sensory organs is due to the huge number of species living in spatially and temporally different environments and to great variation in behavioral patterns. This atlas compiles the electron microscopic anatomy of arthropod sensory organophotoreceptors, chemoreceptors, and others in relation to function, behavior, and environment. The authors show how each sensory receptor is finely tuned to detect the necessary information in the arthropods surroundings and how the sensory receptors dynamically change their fine structures according to their functional and adaptational states. In each two-page spread of the book, electron or light micrographs are shown on the right, with diagrammatic illustrations and accompanying text on the left, in a format that is attractive and easy to understand. The atlas thus provides an important bridge between the physiology and morphology of arthropod sensory receptors.
