Theoretical Computer Science - Proceedings Of The 6th Italian Conference

Book Description

The Italian Conference on Theoretical Computer Science (ICTCS '98) is the annual conference of the Italian Chapter of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science. The Conference aims at enabling computer scientists, especially young researchers to enter the community and to exchange theoretical ideas and results, as well as theoretical based practical experiences and tools in computer science. This volume contains 32 papers selected out of 50 submissions. The main topics include computability, automata, formal languages, term rewriting, analysis and design of algorithms, computational geometry, computational complexity, symbolic and algebraic computation, cryptography and security, data types and data structures, semantics of programming languages, program specification and verification, foundations of logic programming, parallel and distributed computation, and theory of concurrency. The volume provides an up-to-date view of the status of several relevant topics in theoretical computer science and suggests directions for future research. It constitutes a valuable working tool for researchers and graduate students.

FST TCS 2003: Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science

Book Description

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 23rd Conference on Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science, FST TCS 2003, held in Mumbai, India in December 2003. The 23 revised full papers presented together with 4 invited papers and the abstract of an invited paper were carefully reviewed and selected from 160 submissions. A broad variety of current topics from the theory of computing are addressed, ranging from algorithmics and discrete mathematics to logics and programming theory.

Gems of Theoretical Computer Science

Book Description

This book assembles some of the most important problems and solutions in theoretical computer science-from computability, logic, circuit theory, and complexity. The book presents these important results with complete proofs in an understandable form. It also presents previously open problems that have found (perhaps unexpected) solutions, and challenges the reader to pursue further active research in computer science.

Theoretical Computer Science - Proceedings Of The 4th Italian Conference

Book Description

This volume is an up-to-date record of Italian research on theoretical computer science. The main topics featured are: algorithms and complexity, automata and formal languages, concurrency, databases, logic, functional and object-oriented programming, parallel algorithms and architectures, semantics of programming languages, rewriting systems, and others.

The Complexity Theory Companion

Book Description

Here is an accessible, algorithmically oriented guide to some of the most interesting techniques of complexity theory. The book shows that simple algorithms are at the heart of complexity theory. The book is organized by technique rather than by topic. Each chapter focuses on one technique: what it is, and what results and applications it yields.

STACS 99

Book Description

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 16th Annual Symposium on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science, STACS 99, held in Trier, Germany in March 1999. The 51 revised full papers presented were selected from a total of 146 submissions. Also included are three invited papers. The volume is divided in topical sections on complexity, parallel algorithms, computational geometry, algorithms and data structures, automata and formal languages, verification, algorithmic learning, and logic in computer science.

The Fifth Italian Conference on Theoretical Computer Science covers all aspects of Theoretical Computer Science. Among the topics addressed in the volume are Algorithms, Concurrency, Automata, Formal Languages, Computational Complexity, Temporal and Model Logic, Logic Programming, and λ-Calculus.The proceedings include 33 selected papers and three distinguished invited lectures by Michael Luby, Ugo Montanari and Alberto Bertoni.

Fault-Tolerant Search Algorithms

Book Description

Why a book on fault-tolerant search algorithms? Searching is one of the fundamental problems in computer science. Time and again algorithmic and combinatorial issues originally studied in the context of search find application in the most diverse areas of computer science and discrete mathematics. On the other hand, fault-tolerance is a necessary ingredient of computing. Due to their inherent complexity, information systems are naturally prone to errors, which may appear at any level – as imprecisions in the data, bugs in the software, or transient or permanent hardware failures. This book provides a concise, rigorous and up-to-date account of different approaches to fault-tolerance in the context of algorithmic search theory. Thanks to their basic structure, search problems offer insights into how fault-tolerant techniques may be applied in various scenarios. In the first part of the book, a paradigmatic model for fault-tolerant search is presented, the Ulam—Rényi problem. Following a didactic approach, the author takes the reader on a tour of Ulam—Rényi problem variants of increasing complexity. In the context of this basic model, fundamental combinatorial and algorithmic issues in the design of fault-tolerant search procedures are discussed. The algorithmic efficiency achievable is analyzed with respect to the statistical nature of the error sources, and the amount of information on which the search algorithm bases its decisions. In the second part of the book, more general models of faults and fault-tolerance are considered. Special attention is given to the application of fault-tolerant search procedures to specific problems in distributed computing, bioinformatics and computational learning. This book will be of special value to researchers from the areas of combinatorial search and fault-tolerant computation, but also to researchers in learning and coding theory, databases, and artificial intelligence. Only basic training in discrete mathematics is assumed. Parts of the book can be used as the basis for specialized graduate courses on combinatorial search, or as supporting material for a graduate or undergraduate course on error-correcting codes.
